I was wondering if any one knows how to replace the AGR heat shield I all ready have the new one but can't figure out how to replace it. I went to the dealer but they weren't any help so if any one could help it would be greatly apprciated

AGR? :confused

If you mean the tube running from the exhaust manifold to the intake and is part of the EGR system, the aftermarket shield came with holes for pop rivets, and a hole for the sensor to stick through, correct? That's the hardest part -- removing that sensor to properly wrap the shield around the tube.

The bolts are all tough to break loose, but the bolts holding the tube to the exhaust manifold are fairly easy to reach and remove. The intake bolts however, are a different story; you can't quite get a Torx drive in the hole squarely, and therefore you (or rather I) tend to round out the drive hole. It's a pain in the butt. :hb

If you can't get the bolts free, or don't want to risk rounding them out, you can cut the shield so that it can be slipped over the sensor so you can pop rivet it in place. That's what I did in the long run. ;)
 
I had to do the same as Ken, particularly since there is a Gasket for the Intake side of the EGR which nobody local seems to stock.

the replacement part that I have from GM has the hole for the sensor, but the only way i can see to put it on is to remove the end from the exhaust manifold but i can't figure out how to get the clip off.

On the 86 model, the EGR tube is crimp fit to the manifold with a special round ring. The later models were bolted on at the manifold.

There is a special GM tool that will recrimp a new ring after you have done the swap.

It will cost less in the long run to have the dealer do the swap, since you don't/won't have any other use for that tool.

On the other hand, do what Ken said and you can avoid messing with the ring clamp.

I did my own change and used a dremal to cut the old one off. After I unbolted from the intake, the tube came right out. Then I bought a new ring from GM and fashioned my own tool after much trial and error. It worked, but only after wasting a couple of days fussing with it. I had an 86 convertible with the same exact crimp tube as you.
