i own a 94 C4 with a auto trans, question: can i replace my 94 LT1 ENG with a 96 LT4 and still keep my C4's auto tranmission + smog emissions requirments happy? will it work without a ton of modifications?
thanks boonie

I dont know if it can be done with out a "ton of modifications" but the LT4 and the LT1 are both the same block. The LT4 is basicly a hot rodded LT1. Though the LT4 does have OBDII and your '94 LT1 would be OBDI. Back in '96 some Corvette factory workers took an LT1 auto car and swapped it out with an LT4, so it can be done, but I dont know all the details.

For all the dirt check out our LT1 vs. LT4 page. Let us know what you decide, one way or the other.

Question??????????

Would it be easier to swap or change a 96LT1 with auto tranny??

The LT4 swap should be easy. It's the same installation in everyway. You'll need to have your computer reprogrammed for the LT4. An LT4 crate motor is probably $7000 dollars.

Check out GMPartsDirect.com - they have an LT1 upgrade kit called LT4Plus which includes the LT4 heads and intake and the LT4 Hot Cam. You can convert your LT1 to something close to an LT4 with a hotter cam. The kit and other parts costs under $3000, then you need someone to install the parts - labor may be $1000 or more, plus the cost of reprogramming your computer ($300~).

That's my 2 cents

You should be able to find an LT4 for a lot less that 7k.

No biggie!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is really no choice but to sell what we have and trade up to a LT4.

But again, it would be even smarted to trade up to a C5 for couple of bucks more.

For some reason all of us think that our vettes are worth more then they actually are. It's the vette sickness.

Most dealerships will not take a vette in trade unless it is near mint condition and under 50,000 miles no matter how old it is. They will probably try to sell it for a couple of weeks and then wholesale it out.

If you really knew what your vette was really worth, you would probably through up.

It's a good thing I'm not planning on selling my old Vette. It was probably worth $10k before I have the motor redone with LT4 heads, intake, LT4 Hot Cam and other hp parts. I've pumped another $8k into it that I could never get out of it if I had to sell it.

Like I said, it's a good thing I'm not planning to sell my old Vette. I'm going to enjoy it for many more years and it's just going to get faster when I can afford it.

Well, I did not think I was that old, but as someone put it an older man drove it to Missouri for a show. All of you are right, I was the owner of the car. I live in Ohio and did drive it to Florida for an Ecklers show and another at the Cape. Did not really drive the car except to shows in the area and it as been to Mid America Funfest a couple of times so a lot of Corvette people have seen it. It was in a couple of magazines over the years and has won its share of awards.

I purchased the car from an engineer at the factory who with some help from others there built it. It did not come down the line as an LT4 with an automatic.

It is all stock including transmission. ************However it does have a 3000 RPM torque convertor that is not stock. The stock one would not handle the power to the stock transmission.************

As someone else put it, it does generate a lot of interest. I ran it a few times at Bowling Green, Beach Bend and beat LT4 6 speed and 3 C5's so it does run.
