I can't remove my ignition key on my '86 convertible with 118,000 miles. Shifter is in reverse, but the lock cylinder won't rotate all the way to the "lock" position for key removal. I don't want to force it, and am looking for suggestions to remove the key before I have to replace the cylinder.

move the steering wheel back and forth like you are steering the car. Don't do it hard but with somewhat of a force. Try that, it happens to me every once in a while.

I tried your suggestion...unfortunately, the lock cylinder still won't rotate enough to remove the key.

You could try taking the hush pad off. (its the cover just above the knees while sitting in the car) Look along side the steering column, you will see a steel rod running along side. Try manually pushing that up and down while trying to turn the key.

I have a 4+3...needs to be in reverse to remove the key. I'll try the suggestion above. Thanks for the advice.

I ended up turning this over to local Corvette mechanic. The problem was a broken interlock pin, essentially the "anchor" at the end of the manual shifter-to-ignition lock linkage. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
