Can someone tell me what happened. Yesterday, I started my '71. It started fine, choke on. It ran for a minute or two, and I shut it off. I turned it back on about a minute later. When it cranked, it let out a very loud backfire. My wife even came out of the house to see what had happened. Then the car wouldn't start till I primed the carb. It started fine and ran fine the whole day. Any ideas?

Ive been having carb problems also. I don't know the answer either.
What I do know is that is one nice car you have there! :D

John, It sounded like exhaust, but I'm not quite sure.

Is it a quadrajet with choke stove? My 72 loads up with (runs rich) unitl I physically kick off hi idle, the old choke stoves worked well but not as well as elec chokes.

Just a guess but if you are backfiring out the exaust then you aren't burning enough or any fuel in the chamber so maybe there is something wrong with your ignition system? Maybe a spark plug is shot or something? Or maybe the carb isn't being consistent with distribution of fuel/air throughout the cylinders so there is an over load in one and maybe a lack in another?

Just a couple of educated guesses. Good luck!!

And definitely very nice Vette. ;)
