This is a basic question... what is the purpose of the spacer between the intake manifold and the carb? Is it needed? Or can I remove it to gain some hood clearance? Thanks, Dave

Is this the factory 1/4" gasket spacer , or an aftermarket 1"?

The factory unit helps insulate intake manifold heat from the carb. I would tend to leave it on , If you take off a 1" ; replace with a thick factory piece.

The 1" increases plenum area for more peak HP and TQ. Sometimes you can not feel any seat of the pants difference.

the thinner the spacer, the more low end grunt.the thicker spacer makes it work better a little more up the r.p.m. scale.mike

Yeah it's a 1 incher (not to be taken the wrong way):)

I've got a '74 matching # BB that is suposed to be all original and my spacer appears to be 1/4", I'm not sure anything thicker would allow for the proper clearance between the top of the air cleaner seal flange and the under side of the hood.

Alltide,

Mine is # match, but far from original. I've got a few goodies burried in the motoer, as well as an Edlebrock 750 sitting on top.
