Care of Polished Rims

Chip Foose is endorsing a product from Mothers that he says he uses on the wheels of his cars. I've seen the commercial several times during the Barrett-Jackson auction. It's a round polishing pad that apparently attaches to a cordless drill. I guess you put your wax/polish on the pad (it's round), which flexes so you can get in and out of holes and gooves. It looks like a good idea, but if a piece of sand or something abrasive got on there, I'm sure you could do some serious damage. Anyone else see it? -John

JJS,
I have seen this commercial, mainly on Spike TV's Saturday and Sunday morning powerblock- but not for several weeks now. (Seems to be a seasonal thing?) If I'm remembering it correctly, it's a pad made of... what is it made of? Foam? Some type of chamois-like cloth? Chip Foose's product is similar to another one I've seen advertised which also fits onto the end of a drill, and I tend to get them confused.

One of the virtues I've seen advertised about both products is that you can clean them in the washing machine with a load of laundry and they're good to go. I guess on the concern about something abrasive getting caught in the material, the only way to guard against that would be use the pad after you've just washed it, and only after you've just washed your car to get as much loose debris off the car as you can.

Hi JJS -

Foose is endorsing the mothers power buff-ball. I have one. I clean the wheels good before I polish them, so the ball stays grit free, and it can be removed from it's arbor and washed.

I was surprised at how druable the foam ball is - I have polished all four wheels with it and it still looks good.

The other product that has been advertised off and on is Flitz - they have a buffing ball that is similar.

I bought my mothers buff ball at Farm and Fleet (a regional store).

best regards -

I'm not sure how comfortable I would be with ammonia on clear coat...

No Ammonia for me either!! It's hard on Paint, Clear coat and Upholstery!! No Simple Green,No Purple Power, No Wheel Acid of Any Kind!!
I've used Lemon Joy, Hot Water and Solcar Sealant for over 20 yr's!! I do use 2000 grit and Meguir's Clear Coat Scrub with a Foam Wheel for minor scratches and Bird S*it if needed and Reseal!! :upthumbs junk!!

Do you guys ever take the wheels off and clean the inner back side of the rims?

Remo:cool

You can usually reach the wheels by lying down and cleaning the insides. Turn the fronts for easier access. If your car is too low, in front, use ramps. I do remove mine about once a year to deep clean.

Anyone have trouble getting a standard floor jack under your C5? Do you drive the car and each of the tires onto a 2 x 4 or something else? Where are the jacking points under a C5? I've seen those blocks that you can add to your floor jack...do then help? Any other suggestions? I'm thinking about putting chrome C6 wheels on my C5. Anyone buy a set off of ebay? There are new sets of rims available on there for about $800 plus shipping. Seems like a good deal....what do you think? Thanks for the input

A standard floor jack won't make it under mine. I do like you said- drive onto 4 boards. I use 2x10's, about 2 1/2 or 3 feet long. I use another board (a 2x4 I seem to recall, about 18 inches long) under the front or rear crossmember, with the floor jack under that. Then I place the jackstands on each end of the board under the crossmember for extra safety.

I know there are members who've used jacking pucks too.

Here are some links to threads about it:

Sure do!!! I just pulled all four off in the Fall. Picked every little pebble out of the treads, and polished every square inch of each wheel!!!

I've got standard floor jacks and both fit under my C5. All I have to do is remove the whatsyamacallit at the end of the jack. They pull right out.

Got mine

Thanks for the info guys. I just ordered the mini power ball from Mother's. Looking forward to using it!!!
