1988 Corvette Coupe - Bright Red
The carpet in the rear of my 1988 C4 is in great shape except for being faded.
I saw online a very nice cargo mat for the rear area and wondered if anyone has purchased a mat and, if so, does it improve the look? I have never seen one in a Vette. Thanks for your opinion! Happy New Year!

Hey CajunCorvette,

I don't have any opinions but it sounds like I have a clone of your car (see signature) and have also considered getting a rear cargo mat. Thought I'd join this thread and see what opinions you get.

Hey, Ron
Jump in! Your car looks great! I don't think mine looks that nice, but you are giving me something to aspire to! The mats I found are in the Mid America Motorworks catalog and online. I am thinking about the black mat with red C4 logo and Corvette script. I have black mats in the front already. But I'm still considering the red. The problem is the red carpet is faded in the rear, and I am thinking I will never match the faded red with the new red mat. Let's see what others think about a cargo mat. Happy New Year to you!

Ron, do you have the glass top (smoke tint/blue tint)? I have the red targa top, and I really would like to get the glass top one day. I think it would look great!

I too have the 88 red coupe and looking for a cargo mat. Prefer mine to be grey and have the bowtie emblem. Any ideas?

I have the rear mat....I love it. It saves the carpet from getting worn/dirty. They are Lloyds mats. Mine are (front and rear) color matched to original and have the correct C4 emblem embroidered into them. I'll try to get a picture.

Hi CajunCorvette,

Yes I have the transparent top but it gets pretty hot in the summer so I have the static cling type of headliner that does let in some light but blocks most of it. Definitely helps.

Hib, I'm going to check the products as you mentioned.

Thanks all,

Ron

I use a black cargo mat (no emblem) in my Torch Red interior. Nice contrast and I do not worry about carrying or spilling anything.

I bought mine from Mid America Motorworks. I do not know the vendors name. Very high quality and in over ten years has not faded at all.

Good Luck!

WHILE YOU ARE AT IT, PLEASE SAVE THE :w!

I have had a Weathertech in my '95 for one full season. Fawn color to match my interior. Very high quality. My carpet all over is pristine so the liner does not improve the looks, but it does not really hurt the looks either. Its a cargo area for gosh sake! I am happy knowing I'm retaining the looks of the carpet. When we haul back from Vette shows I know that I can just heave my car kit, chairs, wife's purse, umbrella, etc. back there without damage.

I went with the Weathertech black rubber cargo mat. The 99 had one when I bought it and it looked good, so I got one for the 88 which has slightly faded carpet.

I have the weathertech as well but wouldnt recommend it unless you need it for winter ( I use it for skiing). It looks a bit too utilitarian and most importantly prevents access to the storage bins! Yes, you can get to them but you have to lift the entire weathertech. so if you have groceries or car care stuff in the back its a PIA. And heaven forbid if something heavy like a toolbox (or a bag of sand for traction) is in the back...forget it!
The carpet cargo mats are usually split in the middle for bin access. I doubt you'll ever match the carpet even if it was new since red dye lots are notoriously different. I'd definitely go with the black carpet!
:w

I like to keep everything as new and close to original as possible. So I do have a cargo mat, same color as original, to protect from fading, and I also got the emblem embroided in(though that's not original)-but I like it anyway.:)

I also picked up the cargo mat from MidAmerica, for my 96 CE since the car is silver and has black as part of the seat covers the black in the back looks good.
