Carter AFB question

3721 ('64, 300HP, std trans)

main jets: .104 primary, .0689 secondary
idle jet: .035
metering rods: .060" primary, .069" secondary

I got this info from old posts on various bulletin boards. These numbers were confirmed more than once, and all came from sources I trust. So I've satisfied myself that this info is accurate. But that doesn't mean you should. Check the factory shop manual. This info should be in there.

One More Thing

Also found that the following part numbers:

primary jets: 120-161 (.104")
secondary jets: 120-222 (.068")
metering rods: 16-204 (.069" x .060")

The HP book on Carter carbs is a real good resource if you want to know more about these things.

Also see:

www.carbs.net/Carter4.htm

and the tech pages on the Edelbrock web site.

Thanks Critchie! Looks like I have those jets in my carb. I am working on it as a winter project. I want to make it as close to stock as possible, so I have less trouble tuning it when installed. My 64 has an Edelbrock carb on it now, and it runs great, but I can't fit the stock air cleaner on it (because the air horn is an inch too wide). Well.... now off to find an intake 3799349 dated j3, k3 or a4.....I'll keep you guys posted.:)

Funny you should mention that. That's exactly what I'm doing this Winter.

One of my Winter projects was to take the air horn (the top half) off a junk 62-65 AFB and mate it with a modern Edelbrock or Carter AFB body (the bottom half). That way, the hybrid carb would fit on my Holley pattern intake manifold and I could use the original '62 air cleaner and fuel line. This is an interim solution until I want to spring for the original carb and intake manifold (~ $1,000).

I also didn't know what to use for jets and metering rods in my hybrid. The car ran great last year with whatever was in the modern AFB, so I left them in there.

Carter (Federal Mogul) and Edelbrock sell strip kits for these carbs. Summit and the other usual hot-rod places carry them. The kits contain an assortment of jets and metering rods so that you can tune the carb to your engine. Depending on how the car runs, I might fiddle around with that next.

That is a good idea. I hope it works. What's the carb's year and date code for your car? I may have one here in my pile of AFBs.
