Only two casting numbers were used in '72 for the small block. These were 3970010 and 3970014.

If you want to check "matching numbers" then the casting # is NOT what you want. Check the "stamp pad", a machined surface on the block in front of the passanger side head. Should be two numbers stamped there. Write those down and then look at the VIN. One of them should end with the last six digits of the VIN. If so you may have the original engine. If not, the engine has been replaced.

Tom73 is on the money, only two casting numbers, the pad at front of passenger side head has two sets of #s on it small and large, the last 6 of small should match your VIN the large ones are engine ident code, should be something like V0921CKW, the V is Flint, the 09 month, the 21 day, the CKW engine code, in this case 350/200.
