Catalytic converter air line

Hello to Everyone,

Long time since I've been here,,but that's a long story itself. Anyways, I have replaced the cat with an aftermarket one and need to connect the metal air line from the smog pump for AZ emissions. How have others done this? What did you use for the tubing, connections, etc.

Lanny - Some of the aftermarket ones I have seen came with a small section of hose and 2 clamps. Since the original pipe threaded into a fitting on the original convertor,you have to cut the male nut end off the pipe and use the hose deal. Kinda mickey-mouse isn't it?

What brand cat did you get? Just curious. I got a Random Technology. Gave me a big boost in HP because the original cat had collapsed internally and was choking the engine. I did exactly as Burglar said. Mine did not come with a section of hose, so I went to my local NAPA and they sold me some high temp hose. It's sold by the inch and fairly expensive as hose goes. Do not remember what brand of cat I actually got; its been sometime ago. I think I got it from California Muffler. And since its been 2 years since I have driven the car, couldn't tell you if there was an increase in power or not.

My cat did not come with any fittings or anything, just a cap on the air inlet tube. I cut the air inlet block off the original cat and was going to reuse it which is why I was looking for help in where to find the tubing at. I was going to cut the end off original tubing, put some kind of coupler at that joint and reuse the fitting at the new cat.

But may be I'll just get some of this hose at NAPA and two clamps and go that route.

I used copper tubing and compression fittings. I think they are 3/8ths.

Copper tubing.....that was what I first thought I would use. Easy to find, easy to bend.....sounds like a winner to me!!

Does the '84 use the same original cat as the '81 '82?

On the replacement cat, did you just use compression fitting there as well?

This is the original converter for the 84...and yes I used compression fittings on it.

Hi JonM,
Wow! What a difference between the two years... The original one on my 81 was the large...make that LARGE... pancake style...must weigh in at 20lbs. Pretty much filled up the area under the passenger's seat. I'll have to take a picture of it next week to show everyone the difference.

Okay, job is done. Used copper tubing and two compression unions...and oh its 1/2 inch OD tubing. Did not take all that long to bend the tubing into shape.
