I had the carb rebuilt and everythings running fine now except for one thing. After driving for about 5 minutes the Check Engine light comes on and stays on. If I turn the car off and start her back up the light will take another 5 mins to come on again.
Along w/ this check engine light the engine will run rough. And here are the symptoms:
I can immediately tell that the light is on (aside from the obvious) because of the way the engine sounds. It sounds noticeably rougher. Instead of a smooth sound its a little choppy.
The idle drops by 100 or more RPMs and the throttle response is no longer crisp. I have to give it a little more gas for it to go and when it does it jumps into acceleration. It also doesnt have as much Umph.
When coasting like down a hill it sounds like someone is kicking the floor board under my feet a little. It doesnt have any pattern to it its just irregular. Today when I was pullin into the garage I opened the door to listen a little instead of turning her off and it sounded like small popping coming from the exhaust. Nothing real bad or loud.
When driving the light will never go off. It stays on. Here's the deal though. My buddy mechanic thats doing all the work for me doesnt recognize the diagnostic plug thats under the ashtray. He has a GM scanner but it doesnt seem to match the plug although we've never tried to plug it in to it. I read in another post that theres a manual way to do this and tha tthe plug is different from all other years (81). If theres not some special tool thats needed then perhaps I can get the code myself and go from there or can get w/ my guy I we can tackle this.
I know there are some serious pros on this board here so any help from you guys would surely be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
