Hi, I am still getting the check engine light on my 81 after I changed the Oxygen sensor and disconnected the battery. Is there anything else I can do????
Thanks for your time. Dennis

Remove your ashtray and "jump" terminals 4 & 5 (D&E) on the diagnostic plug with a piece of wire or paper clip. Some plugs are mounted backwards. The long flat side should be towards the firewall. With the ignition on but with the engine NOT running this will give you the trouble code. The check engine light should give you a code 12 (1 flash pause 2 flashes) if the computer is functioning properly. It will give you 3 code 12's then it will give you the trouble code. There is a whole list of codes. Once you get the code, you can post the result or e-mail me at mitchandtanya@bellsouth.net and I will look it up for you.

Thanks very much. I called my mechanic and he told me to bring the car in and he will check it with his computer and let me know what is causing the problem. Will he be able to check it out without jumping the wires as you suggested?? Thanks again, Dennis

He will make the connection under the ashtray, plug his tester in and see what codes are being dropped. or as dytchdoc outlined it can be done by counting the engine light flashes with the plug disconnected and 4 & 5 shorted follow dytchdoc proceedure.

There are several old threads dealing with the codes and checking for codes and what numbers mean what ;)

Thanks again for your help. I will bring my car in next week to see what is wrong, GREATLY Appreciated. Dennis

Check Engine Light ... Still Comes On HELP!!!

Sorry if I used the wrong thread. I just changed the throttle Body Sensor in the Carburetor. The O2 Sensor was done before this and it did not work. I have yet to find the time to jump the plug and see what codes come up. In the meantime can anyone suggest as to what else it might be. It comes on and off at irregular intervals. There is no set time for it to come on. Thanks for the help thus far, rollsman.
