check engine light

i have just bought a 1984 in australia and it keeps coming up with check engine and then it dissapears for a while but keeps returng.I have had it tuned twice in two weeks but message still comes on and it runs fine for a little while and then it will miss a bit and then go ok again.Unfortunately there are not many mechanics in aus. that seem to be able to help.one guy said it is to do with codes, so i got the codes for him but he said he didnt know how to extract them.Is he on the right track any help would be greatly appreciated

Yes he is on the right track . You have an intermittant fault code stored in your computer .You need to access this by jumping two lugs on the aldl under the dash on the drivers side . Its in plain view without removeing anything ., near the steering column . It has about 8 or ten lugs and I believe you jump the two on the right end , one above the other . Please wait for someone to confirm this befor you do it . When you do it it will flash the check engine light . First it will flash once then three times to give you a thirteen . that lets you know you've accessed the computer . It will do this three times , then it will give you any codes it has stored . Be sur to have the key off when you jump the lugs . Turn it on to get codes then off again to remove jumper . Once again , please wait till someone confirms this info . Cliff
