z is warmed up(only seems to happen then) sitting at stop light foot off clutch sounds like a can full of marbles.????????...thanks for any input. gary

There have been several other threads about this. the short version is that the sound is normal. I suspect that when you put the clutch in, the sound decreases, but does not completely go away. the sound has to do with the design of the transmission, the way the gears are cut, the materials that the housing is made of, etc. the transmission is built to be strong, but it is at the expense of being quiet. There have been previous Corvette transmissions that have been even louder. The M22 "rock crusher" had a reputation for being noisy.

My 2 cents: It is noisy, but it is because the emphasis was on performance and durability. A Lexus would be more quiet, but then it would not be a Corvette, would it? ;)

Check out this thread.
There are also lots of threads on the z06vette forum about it.
I just can't figure out why, if it is normal, it doesn't happen to everyone ;shrug

Idling at a stop light with shifter in neutral and clutch out, what part of the mn6 transmission would be turning or moving?

The transmission is also at the rear of the car just in front of the rear axel gear housing

If I remember correctly GM had a solution to the noise but it would have slowed the car down a few tenths of a second so thankfully GM opted for performance...

Crank the radio and hammer it!

Enjoy

The clutch assembly, driveshaft and gearbox input shaft will be turning. I have found that pressing the clutch in and gently releasing (without shocking the drivetrain) will let the assembly rotate much more quietly. You get used to it and I now only bother when I am sitting for a long time.

thanks for the info. sounds it may be the nature of the beast:) I had called the dealership before i posted. service told me they wanted to check it out after they warmed up the car,and told me to drop it off for the day...yeah right:L ..gary

had vette checked out by vette speed shop. no problems. normal sounds from bearings. and after 1.5hrs of checking things out no charge...gary

The 50th Anniversary video tape that came with my ZO6 addresses this as a normal mechanical noise inherant to the drivetrain. You should not be alarmed!:eek

Get louder exhaust, it'll go away. :D

As you get older ,,, your hearing starts to go away... then the whole car sounds pretty good....;LOL

Mine has a little chatter. My '03 Dodge 3500 has a 6 spd and it also chatters. From what I've read and heard that the noise in both the Z and the Ram are normal and is caused by the input shaft. That is why you don't hear it when you mass the clutch.

H.D.

will keep fingers crossed....probibly seems noise because Im looking for it..and its during stop and go traffic when things get hot;) .....gary

Upgrade to a stag III clutch. Problem solved. I know, just isn't right. GM should have handled something as simple as this. Let’s think, how long has this type setup been around? Things that make you go hmmm. If you do a little drag racing with your Z wait tell you get the dreaded clutch peddle stuck to the floor syndrome. No that one really will **** you off. It's killing me!!!

:mad

I wont do too much drag racing. will see how long it lasts!!
