Checking Front Hubs

How do I check the front hubs.

I put new hubs on the front last year, tonight I was jacking the front end and when I gave the front wheel a tug it seemed to be too loose I can actually move the wheel at 12 and 6, so I removed the wheel and the rotor, I can still move the hub a bit.

So I pulled the hub off the car, now it feels fine. but when it's bolted to the car it feels loose.

Problem #2 - where would the oil be coming from in this pic. There is a drop on the sensor (whatever sensor that is)

I'm not sure what that sensor is but I would like to know also. While installing my headers I somehow broke the securing tab on the sensor. If I had to guess I would think its either an Oil temp sensor or a oil pressure sensor. Most of the time I've seen the pressure sensors mounted up near the distributor but that may just be on my Dodge.

:w

I'm not sure either, I believe it is a sensor, and there is a unit to the left of the distributer on the block, I think that is the sender.

I would love to find out for sure, I think it is the cause of my leak, the wires in the pic get oil on them then it drips onto the exhaust and smokes. Just not sure how it gets onto the wires.

What should I put on the threads of this sensor to seal it?

That's your oil temperature sender unit. Sometimes the epoxy potting on the sender leaks if it's old. It's mounted over the top of the oil pump.

As for your hubs, I have been told that over-tightening the mounting bolts is the main cause for premature failure.
Maybe that's why they seem loose when they're bolted on.

Teflon tape. Give it a few wraps.

I occasionally get a little oil that comes up the dipstick tube and leaks on the headers during spirited driving. It will actually push the dipstick up about 1/8 to 1/4 inch. I've been told that this is a sign of a bad PVC valve, but I've gone through three and it still happens (only occasionally.) Each one I've pulled off still rattle like they should. :confused

I know this is on the other side of the engine from your problem.

I would say it is oil temp sender. The oil pressure sender is on the top of the block at the back to the drivers side of the dist. How much oil do you find there. In that area it could come from one of four places. The valve cover, the back of the intake , the oil presure sending unit, or even the temp sending unit. My first guess would be the valve cover.

The valve covers look great, dry all around, but I will check the others, I did the intake last year and believe it is good as well.

Yeah!!!! Put some tape on it! :_rock

Are you sure the play in the hubs are not just worn out ball joints? The only reason I say this is because the whole reason I changed my rear hubs is because my mechanic told me I had 1" play in my bearings and I was driving in the "Danger Zone". After I replaced the hubs, I still had the play in the wheel (maybe not as bad, dunno?). Turned out to be worn bushings in the control arms causing the play.

Well I just used a dial indicator and got a .003 -.004 reading suposedly .005 is time to replace.

Not sure where all the play is from, you may be right, ball joints?

You aren't going to see that .004" move the wheel. Check the control arm bushings and the ball joints for movement.
One good way is to use a block of wood or a brick as a fulcrum and put a 2X4 lever under the tire and push up on the wheel to see if the ball joints are moving.
Good luck!

Well I just came back from the first cruise of the year and WOW :D

What a difference the bushings and shocks made, as well as getting the wheels balanced, the guy said one of my rims is bent and even put it back on the machine and showed me, he had trouble balancing it, but said if I put it on the rear instead of the front I probably will never feel it.

He was right, the shake I had in the front end is gone and the back felt awesome. Took it for a run on the highway and made it to 110mph and not a shake, with the roof off.

WooHoo, Corvette season is here:W

Man, I like to see a guy that doesn't let any moss grow under his feet. Its a good feeling to have all your problems go away with a twist of the wrench!

Nice job!

Thanks bud,

I hate to sit still too long, next project please.....

Shhhhhh......I can't say that too loud, if my wife here's it she will think I meant around the house.

All the project could not have been completed without the good ole CAC and you guys.

Thanks Rob, Ken, and everybody else, too many to mention, you know who you are.
