GM's Chevrolet brand isn't simply about to launch a new small car -- Michigan-built Sonic, replacing South Korean-made Aveo -- it's edging toward hipness.
Evidence? Its execs showed a Sonic Z-Spec concept car -- what today's hot-shoe crowd calls a tuner car. The ordinary Sonic four-door hatchback and sedan won't go on sale until fall and already the bow-tie folks are teasing us with a zip-mobile.

Chevy Corvette engineers tuned the chassis, Chevy says -- in case you thought Sonic would be a bit silly going around corners at what the cops like to describe in their traffic reports as a high rate of speed.
Chevy also bragged that Sonic will have more back seat room than the Ford Fiesta.
Promising. But, then, all cars seem wonderful before they hit the showroom. Sonic will make the already intriguing small-car market ever-more interesting.
