Clutch Chatter on 2007

Need some input from the team ....

I took delivery of my 2007 'Vette convertible (black on black on black) last week and immediately took it on a 1,000 mile freeway trip. The car ran flawlessly and got 29 mpg, but I have an issue that the dealer says is a non-issue.

When I engage the clutch slowly (as in maneuvering in a parking lot) the clutch chatters like crazy....reverse is even worse... (it sounds like the rear end is going to fall out). If I give it a decent launch, everything is smooth. Can anyone tell me if I'm going to have to live with this, or is there some "guidance" I can give my dealer??

I've had manual trans cars since my first new car in '66 and I've never had clutch chatter like this.

Thanks for the help, and I appreciate all the good stuff on this site.

Are you sure it's the clutch? The normal C6 chatter issue is the differential chatter that is widely discussed. Is it most noticable when in a very slow, tight reverse turn, as when backing out of the garage or parking spot? There is a manufacturer's bulletin out about it and a flush of the rear end is free and helpful. I had mine done in late April, and it has stayed chatter free since then. Good luck.

rear end chatter

There's been a TSB on rear end chatter for a couple of years now. That might be what you're hearing. It's a matter of the dealer changing your rear fluid, then if that doesn't work, the clutch packs get changed.

I'd recommend going over to www.corvettemechanic.com and ask those techs.

The guys are straight shooters and probably have heard of your question before.

Sound is very hard to decifer over the internet so be aware it'll take time to really understand if its normal or not..

One idea is to drive another six speed manual they have on the lot? I'm sure after spending the kind of money you just did they wouldn't object to something like that?

If the car makes the same noise its normal. If it doesn't make the noise as your car does..

Something needs to be fixed.

Thats the fastest way to find out if its normal.

Good luck.

Thanks for the quick response. The noise I'm getting is immediately at the start of clutch engagement before and just as the car begins to move. I don't get anything that feels like diff. clutch pack chatter as I maneuver slowly in a parking lot. I've felt that typ chatter and it's a higher pitch/lower amplitude than what I'm feeling. The chatter is so bad in reverse that it makes the doors and side glass rattle.

Thanks Hardnoks....

I'll go back to the dealer's shop and get with the service manager this time. The service writer didn't even bother to go for a ride to see first hand..... SHE was too busy !!!

Make sure they get the latest TSB,as there is a newer one recently released that supersedes the older one .Check the FAQ'S on this forum for more info.

I think the clutch needs to be broken in the same as the engine.

When I got my '07, the clutch seemed very "ruff, jittery, and jurky" on slow takeoffs. Faster takeoffs were OK. But after I got about 500 miles of "in-town" driving, it has smoothed out. It is just fine now.

Thanks for the GOOD Information

Orange Flash ..

I was beginning to think that I had a problem that I was just "going to have to live with" !!! I'm nearly 60 yrs old, and have owned or dirven about every muscle car that Chevy has built since 1966 including some 1/4 mile Super Stockers that ran low 10's on 4 speed trans, and have NEVER experienced the kind of shudder I have on my 2007. Since the car only has 1600 miles on it (1100 miles on its virgin trip) I had hesitated to do any hard launches on the car. However, I HAVE seen the high side of 140 (and it was still pulling hard before I ran out of room)!!! I think it's time that I do some launches and some of the 3rd gear burnishing that you and C4C5Specialist recommend.... Love the car! Where else can you get a car with the looks, 1/4 mile adn top end performance and still get 30 mpg on the freeway ???? Love those Chevy's.....

zella62: We are of similar generation! You describe a pretty severe shudder. It is, of course, possible that your C6 has a worse than average shudder that will not be cured short of a complete clutch replacement. But I highly recommend you try the burnishing treatment. The key is to burnish as opposed to out and out torture of the clutch. I was very careful to not overdo it. Putting warpage into the flywheel surface or glazing the clutch facing material would just make matters worse. I spread it out over several days, always started with a cold clutch and was careful to not carry it to excess. Doing it on a hill make it easy to control the process (if you happen to have one near you). Good luck and keep us posted on results. :beer
