How does the clutch fork fit into the throwout bearing? Several people I've talked to do not agree on the correct procedure. The fork has a riveted spring steel whatsit on the fork end. Does the spring thing join the fork in the same grove of the throwout bearing?

This is a poor design, as it permits the fork to be mis-assembled with the "curls" on the end of the fork installed over the flange on the rear of the throwout bearing - WRONG! I see many of these, and it results in inability to get the clutch linkage adjusted properly and get correct pedal free play.

Both the ends of the fork itself AND the ends of the tension spring go INSIDE THE GROOVE in the bearing; don't forget to lube all three surfaces of the groove and the circular groove in the I.D. of the bearing and the end of the pivot ball with gray moly lube.
