Hi vette enthusiasts!! Just purchased a 98 vette w/6 speed manual tranny and I have the service column lock message but steering is not locked. Had battery checked yesterday and Auto parts store said it was good. Still had them put a full charge anyways. But I noticed when I put a volt meter on it would read 12v and soon as it was started would drop to 8v-9v but would climb back up to 13.1v. Could this be a bad battery when loaded? And causing my service column lock?

enjoy!!!

Welcome to CAC! :w In response to your question; I'd say "yes". The battery is extremely important in the correct functioning of these cars. Not sure where you had the battery checked, but I'd take it somewhere, where it could be fully tested under load. The numbers that you posted will be an issue.

Welcome and Congratulations

Welcome aboard we're glad you have decided to join us. I think normal voltage would be 13.8 to 14.4 volts as memory serves me. But not sure this would be your problem with the message your getting about the column lock either! Low voltage on these cars do make them do funny things though ;shrug and so do bad and no grounds. . . . might want to consider this as well.
