Just recieved my Column Lock Recall notice for my 2000 C5 (automatic). Letter says they (the dealership) will be "removing" the column lock......Whats the deal here? Won't this make it easier to steal my C5? Why can't they "replace" the lock or is this just another way for GM to "take a dump" on thier customers?

Replace it with what? A new one just like the original faulty one? I can tell you have never experienced this problem! Go get it removed -- it's like a bad tooth!

OK, how about replacing the Column Lock with one that works like it's supposed to.....I don't suppose that anyone has thought about the repercussions when the "auto theft" community realizes that all the C5's with automatics will soon have a steering column that does not lock.............these people are not stupid. They live for this sort of thing to happen.............

About two years ago I ran into this problem. The first time I noticed trouble, a DIC message said that the steering column lock needed service as I was backing out of my garage to go to work. My steering wheel was frozen. Turning the car off and restarting released the wheel lock.

Employing the time-honored guy reasoning, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", I just went about my business.

Two days later, parked at a lunch place, the wheel lock engaged and left me with only 'call the tow truck' as an option.

I called the truck (roadside assistance), someone from work picked me and my guest up, the truck somehow extracted my Vette from the parking lot, Chevy fixed the problem and delivered the car back to my workplace, and my steering column lock still locks.

Just get it fixed. Did I mention that my Vette is a 2000?
If your lock doesn't work after the 'repair', go back and make them fix it. I'll bet this doesn't happen.

The "auto theft" community knows that's a faulse sence security. All you have to do is pull real hard and the wheel breaks free anyway.

This post was sent to me by MBunnell, so I'm posting it here. (At least I think it was intended as post.)

My 2002 ZO6 has had the Steering Column Locked 4 times.
1. 5/28/02 Caused Accident
2. 6/15/03 Towed to Chevrolet Dealer and next said it was not locked when they started the Car.
3. 7/24/03 Replaced body control module and program. Install column lock actuator and install by-pass relay.
4. Towed to Chevrolet Dealer, Tow truck driver said it was locked when he left car at Dealer, they said it was not locked when they went to service the car.

Personally I'm not too worried about the column lock being removed from my car for two reasons. One is that the factory theft system does a damn fine job. If a thief wanted you car bad enough and he knew a way to defeat this system the column lock wasn't going to stop him.

Second is that I do not believe many people will be able to steer a Corvette without the car running given the width of the front tires and how difficult it would be to steer.

Dittos here...then I called GM and the customer service lady asked for my Vin # and then looked it up and said that there was no column lock recall notice for my '04 to fix the lock and I then told her that my '04 A4 did not even have a lock in the steeing column and the line went dead until I spoke 15 seconds later then she responded by telling me once again that at the present time there was not a recall for the broken lock or for my column lock problem and then I just told her thanks and told her to have a great day! What a bunch of jerks......;LOL ;LOL ;LOL
