Can someone please explain to me about Compression Ratio's and tell me their significance to engine rebuilding, many thanks Jerry

Higher compression ratios generally mean more power. It can also cause pre-ignition detonation when the compression of the air fuel mixture is ignited by the heat caused by the compression rather than a spark.

Higher octane gases combat this but they are gradually going the way of the dodo bird.

Aluminum heads can allow for higher compression ratios with out pre-ignition knock.

I think cams, particularly those with large overlap, can impact pre-ignition but someone knowledgeable about this will have to give the specifics.
