Dan,
The light that illuminates the A/C controls and that part of the console is actually above the gauge console
If you feel above the gauges (Center Dash Guage Cluster) you will feel where the bulb is. It is molded into the plastic of the gauge cluster housing. The light has a magnifing tip that concentrates the light to the console.
I've had success removing the screws (phillips) on the side and top of the gauge housing, then VERY carefully (using a small flat screwdriver) moving the entire gauge panel down and out enough to replace the bulb. NOTE: I've changed out a few of these, and almost every one has a very sharp metal edge as part of the light socket. THIS SHARP edge WILL cut or tear the dash cover if you force it, also be aware that the gauge cluster housing is OLD and can be very brittle, and take care to not force it beyond it's flexible point :eek

The bulb is listed at the L81VetteRegistry in the Spec section. Most Corvette shops/suppliers carry this light, some think they are worth twice their weight in GOLD

... You should be able to find one for around $2.50 to $3.00, but I've seen them as high as $7.00 at some shops :nono
Good luck, and just a note, the allen screws in the gauge cluster housing are FAKE
