I have a 94 Coupe and have tried everything I could think of to clean the console but nothing has worked. It remains sticky and the top layer of paint is peeling off. Any ideas?

On my '93, when the console started doing what you just described, I just took it out of the car and took all the paint off.

All I did was peal it off by hand (and a bit with a scraper and screwdriver). I used a blow dryer to heat it up a bit in the harder areas. When I was done, it was black, and had more of a sheen to it than the factory paint. I did not do the rest of the dash and it looked fine (to me anyway)

Hi Vettelt 193,

Can you take a picture of the console after paint removal and post it here??? I am really curious about that. Mine also has a few `patches` here and there where the factory original coating is gone and I am wondering how it would look is all areas in the console is removed...

Oh by `console` I am understanding the area around the ash tray and such, right???

I can't take a pic because I sold my '93 :( My '96 isn't bad enough yet to peal it all off. The only way I can describe the look is it is a bit more shiny than the factory rubber paint, but not high gloss by any means. The reason why I did it is a corvette tech suggested it to me. He said he sees cars with it pealed off all the time, and they all look fine.

And Yes, I am talking about the panel that surrounds the shifter, ash-tray, etc.

Again, I only did that one panel, including the ash-tray cover. The rest of the rubber painted dash I left alone (surrounding the radio, A/C, etc.) I thought it looked just fine, and never had anyone notice that it was different than the rest of the dash.

I am going to do exactly that with my -93 this summer, on the console and also the drivers door armrest.

I am a bit worried that the difference to the rest of the dash might catch your eye but at the end of the day, it is worse now with the "stick rubber paint" peeling of.

Now that i hear other that have done it, i am more confident of how it will turn out.

This is truly a great place!!
