one of mine is cracked in half and I was wondering what you all have done for replacements. I even though about laying fiberglass over this particle board or whatever it is and not have to worry about it again.
I then thought about a real thin type plywood but realized this piece does bend to conform to contours so that idea is out. or do companies still make this part.

You can purchase replacement fiberboard panels. One of mine is cracked, but when in place and with the carpet trim on it, you can't tell it.

:)

:w there,

When I redid the interior on RARE I got 1/8" press board, traced the old side panels, then cut new ones. Total cost of about $4.00 ;) Here is a link to what I called Phase II with RARE ;)

The press board is smooth on one side and has small indentations (for a lack of a better term) on the other side. It's flexable and easy to work with. I bought it at a local ACE Hardware store, so I'm sure it is at any Lowes/Home Depot or lumber yard..

I used 1/32" plywood from a hobby shop.
It's the kind they use for model airplanes.
Works good. Very flexible, and doesn't let the screw heads pull through like the cardboard did.

Thanks I will look into your ideas!

Yoda that rear capret gave me inspiration LOL. Mine was originally a camel interior car but I am going to go with 1981 silver interior color.

My husband just customized some side pieces for me in lieu of the carpeting and I am liking it. I will try and post pictures when I get home tonight. I did get all new interior carepting but thats a LOT of carpeting and I wanted a different look. I know he used the old stuff as a template to make the new ones.

This is what I did on my 79 console. But make sure when you find the right piece of 3/16 pressboard, and that you have to glue the carpet on and right up to the upper edges of the console side pieces as the slot in the console top and arm rest is just over a 1/4 inche wide so it's a tight fit when reinstalling the new sides pieces.

I scaned mine into my Puter and output em in corel draw to one of my laser cutters , did it in 3mm (1/8th) black acrylic/perspex and used black leather to clad them......I have the drawings with relevant holes in corelDraw format (or indeed any vector format you want)
The perspex bends easily and is strong.
