convertible top fluid

does anyone know what kind of fluid needs to be used in the convertible top motor no dealers in this area seems to have the part number that they gave me so I wondered if anyone knew of a substitute mike

If it's a hydraulic oil you need, then Shell Tellus oil is a very good oil. It comes in ISO grades 22 to 150. (In other words, about 6wt to 40wt.)

I can't imagine what else it would be but my concern is the IF.

I'd like to know for sure as I also have a power top .Plus I'd like to know what caused the need to want to add fluid .

Hydraulic oils are basically 4 types:

1. Mineral based and have zero additives

2. Petroleum based and contain rust and oxidation inhibiters (also known as "R & O" fluids

3. Pertroleum based and contain all additives (rust, oxidation, anti-wear, anti-foam, low temp fluidity, filterability, good water seperation, excellent air release, "extended life" .)

4. The synthetic class

The oil I recommended is in #3.

I think he's right. I was wondering this the day after I brought my Vette home. I looked into it then and found out it is a hydrallic system. My worry became after the car begins to get some years on it, I will need to remember to check those hose's regularly. One breaking would definitely make a mess.
