Coolant leaking from transmission?

I noticed a few puddles of coolant under my transmission the other day. The car is an '82 with the 700R4 in it. It does fine shifting when cold, but after it warms up it starts acting all crazy. My question is, should I replace the radiator? It does leak up front also. Or is it another problem within the transmission? Thanks, in advance.

The ONLY liquid that should be inside you auto trans is a petroleum-based auto transmission fluid. If you have COOLANT (antifreeze-water) inside your auto transmission ... it will ruin it in a quick hurry. A likely cause of coolant inside an automatic trans is a broken radiator. If you think there's coolant in your trans ... stop operating it immediately. Pull the radiator and have it checked at a rad shop. Liberally flush trans with many quarts of fresh trans fluid ... drop the trans pan and change trans filter ... purge all traces of coolant from trans ... and pray. Coolant contains water ... water will quickly dissolve the glue that binds the trans' friction material to friction discs ... friction material quickly sloughs off and trans is toast. G'Luck.

You might want to jack up the vette and get underneath it to see if you can find out if in fact it is coming from the the trans or if its coming from the engine somewhere and traveling back and just looks like it is coming out if the engine but either way find out where it is coming from..that is not a good sign!!!

good luck bill :w

I agree with Bill. It could be a leak from a heater hose and just dripping under the tranny. Get it up and take a close look. Make sure the heater control is on to allow flow into the heater core and pressurize the entire system. If you don't, you might not find the leak first time around. Good luck.

I can say that I had a slight coolant leak under my transmission also. I had a freind of mine check it out and he found a rusty radiator, to the point of where he pushed his finger on it, it busted through. So, you could check that out. Mine's still in the shop right now cause they ordered the new one and should be here today so I can have the car for the weeknd :).
