Cooling fan temp

Ok, I asked earlier at what temp does the ecm call the fan on and was told around 228, now here is my problem. My fan turns on when the temp gauge on my 86 reads 147. Is the sensor that the ecm uses to know what temp it is to turn on the fan the same as the sensor that tells the gauge what temp it is? If so I am abit confused as to what to change. Thanks in advance.

No

There are some factors here,
1) If you have a custom chip, the trip value can be modified.
2) The sensor for the ECM is on the front of the block close to the cold start sender. It might be faulty however going DOWN in sensitivity is odd... It could be an aftermarket sender ( Hypertech makes em )
3) If your A/C is on it will modify when the fan comes on dictated by the HIGH side A/C pressure.

This set point is with the ac off. How could I tell if an aftermarket chip was installed? My car even in 90 degree weather never registers above 160 on the gauge.
