Corvette Club celebrates 50th anniversary
Cars to be displayed at special event

MARSHALL, MI -- It's hard not to notice a Corvette.
The sleek American sports car represents freedom, youth and fun.
This Sunday, the Corvette Club of Battle Creek hopes to draw people to the Calhoun County Fairgrounds to admire the beauty of the iconic cars both old and new, in celebration of the club's 50th anniversary.
Club President Larry Lewis said Wednesday 100 cars have pre-registered, but he is hoping to at least double that figure.
"We've had as high as 320 at one event," Lewis said.
He said in case of rain, the fairgrounds offers adequate barn space to move the event inside.
In addition to Corvettes from 1953 to 2010, the event will feature a Michigan International Speedway pace car, two Corvettes Lewis said have "raced high up in the circuit," various food options and an awards presentation.
Trophies will be given out from first through third place in six classes, as well as the Best of Show trophy, which is a people's choice award. A panel of judges will determine the winner of the Jack Lane Memorial Trophy, based on criteria such as cleanliness and originality.
"He was one of the founding members of the Battle Creek Corvette Club and of the show," Lewis said of the late Jack Lane.
Lewis owns two Corvettes, but he enjoys all sports cars and the cameraderie of fellow hot rod junkies.
"I have two Camaros besides that, and a Harley-Davidson," Lewis said. "I just like American sports cars. People that own them are friendly and hospitable."
