1966,and a 1962 thats almost complete
So on sunday we had a large local vette show,I went there with my old frame and alot of take off parts I have collected from my 66 restoration and the 62 I am presently doing, On saturday I marked all of the prices on index card and layed everything out neatly to sell the parts.

Well all I can say is it was a lot of fun being on the other side of the swap meet table. Now I know what I must look like when I am running up to the swap meet tables looking for a specific part, pulling out my list and checking date code ranges.

You know I allways thought the vendors at swap meets were swap meet vendors, meaning they did it all of the time. But I now understand some guys are just like me,just trying to clear the garage of un-needed parts to make room for needed parts. And to get some money to purchase more parts for the present project.

I really had alot of fun.I was insulted several times when asked how much I was asking for my rusty old 62 frame, and how criminal it was that I seperated it from the car and was doing a custom car.I was also threatened because the steering column for the 62 did not have the vin number still on it,I was asked for a flier for the shows I would be attending next season and if I had any catlogs for my other stuff.

But I did get to speak to alot of people who were actually planning a project like the one I am doing

I had a great time and I know have a new veiw of the guys behind the tables at the swap meets.

Everybody that buys at a swap meet should try being a vendor first. I vend maybe once a year or so, and always enjoy it for the most part. But it does seem that you get at least one a*&^#*e that has no intention of buying
anything but will pick your stuff apart, usually in a loud voice to show those around what an expert he is.

Were you at Mahwah by any chance ? I saw a frame there and as a lady told about the conversion a guy standing next to me looked at me and said what a crime it was to destroy a car that way. He almost fainted when I told him I had done the same to my matching #'s 245 horse 57'. LOL

With all that new-found cash in your hands, beer's on you. :beer

You know I sold allot of stuff and my wife(who asks for nothing, and has always been uderstanding and supportive of my addiction to cars) ended up with all of the loot. For a new bedroom set she was saving for.

You Know I had 2 of those folks together as a team, and instead of getting angry with them I had a great time quizzing them how much they knew about vettes.

When I saw it there I thought of you and was going to say hello but then I thought I remembered you saying you were selling everything to one guy and that it was probably him selling the stuff.

I did sell the majority of the stuff all to one fellow,I actually loaded it on the guys trailer in a drizzling rain, but he wanted to renagoceate the deal after his truck was loaded.

I took my stuff back and sent him on his way.

Larry,

That was a cool report, and sounds like you had some fun. Did you end up selling everything that you wanted to sell?

Yes and alot of take off parts from my 66. the majority of everything that did sell, sold in a mad frenzy of about 20 minutes as soon as I pulled into the swap meet. Maybee 4 items were sold thru out the rest of the day

During the day at about noon a fellow wanted the frame,He wanted to give a deposit on it as long as I would deliver it to his house about an hour away.I did not want to take the deposit because I really did not want to deliver the frame so far away.He called me during the day to remind me he had cash waiting and to drop off the frame for him. As I was checking the tie down straps on the trailer prior to pulling out of the swap meet getting ready to call the fellow,A guy came in scratched at the passenger side rear end center section and we made a deal within 2 minutes, I delivered the frame to his freinds house about 10 minutes from the swap meet.

My NCRS chapter has an annual indoor swap meet every April (our sponsoring Chevy dealer clears out his service department and we fill it with 30-35 vendors - no Chinese tools, just Corvette parts); good way to get rid of excess/leftover parts and share them with guys that need them. I peddled about $1200 worth last April.

I do one show per year, and that's Corvette Carlisle. We have 8 spaces on the I/J row. I share these spaces with 5 other guys. Now, we're all "regular" guys, not flea market vendors or professionals. I'm a dentist, the other fellows are as follows: lawyer, plumber, govt. worker, drug representative, and railroad worker. All of us are employed full time, not "hurting" for cash, etc. We always have unique and rare items. We do it for FUN. We usually buy more "stuff" than we sell.

Being a vendor is really interesting. Some condescending types offer you ridiculously low prices, thinking that you must need the money to feed your family. They'll wave a $20.00 in front of you and say "take it or leave it". We leave it.

Some "accuse" you of not knowing what your parts fit. There are also the "know it all's".

You'll also see the same guy come back again and again and pick up the SAME part, as if it's changed in the 30 minutes since he looked at it before.

You have guys get mad at you for selling a part. Typically a guy will come back on Saturday, after looking at the part of Friday, and be surprised that it isn't there anymore. They're mad that you sold it because "they expressed an interest" in it. It's a real study in humanity. Chuck

"no Chinese tools, just Corvette parts"

You know allot of the swap meets are ruiened because of this,

Corvettes of Carlilse should also have all of the tool people in one area,
Used vendors in one area,
Then the normal corvette vendors in the next area,
Service related vendors in one area

I know the people selling spaces at swap meets want to sell them all,but as with the atlantic city auction and the raceway park swap meet is now a waste of time for me.

I say this because I have a bad knee, hip, and back, and I only have so many steps to use in a day,and if the majority of the steps are being used to get past the chinese tool tents (who almost all have the same tools at the same prices) I dont get to purchase the real used corvette parts I set out to get.

I hate to be a winer but its alot of work for me to get thru all of a swap meet such as corvettes of carlilse

Boy Larry,

That really struck a chord with me! I too am crippled up pretty good with a bad ankle that I broke into 6 peices, that will only let me walk so much in a day. Usually after a swap meet, I am hardly able to walk for 2 days. I have limited myself to the meets that allow me to use my golf cart instead of walking the whole thing. I would go to more of them if the vendors were segregated as you said, but I am sure that the Chineese tool vendors would have a fit!

Regards, John Mcgraw

I actually think that Carlilse has got alittle better, remember when every third vendor there had Beenie Babies :D

I'm not too keen on walking all day either at my age, but NOBODY could cover Carlisle in a day (or two, for that matter); with the 111-degree heat index and miserable humidity this year, I "toured" for about six hours on Friday and got a lot of photos I needed for my upcoming "Swap Meet Survival" article in C.E., and never left the shade of our Vetteheads.com tent all day Saturday :D

i would agree! if the vendors were arranged by group or type it would also make it a LOT easier to find what you are looking for. There are guys selling old used parts next to the guys selling new shiney repro parts next the Chineese tool people, etc. My first Carlise was this year and just walking around finding the vendors I wanted was hard, let alone trying to find the parts I wanted. if they were arranged on in a more logistically planned set-up it would make everything easier. Why make people walk 1/2 mile down past 143 vendors of various things you don't need just to find the vendor or product your looking for. If you knew that you are looking for used parts go directly to area "A". New parts go to area "B", clothing and assorted go to area "C", tools are in area "D", restoration services area "E" etc. That way I could go to the area i need and "shop" without wasting time with extra walking in the heat, dust, and crowds and it would make the show that much more enjoyable.
just my 2 cents
