Corvettes Bursting into Flames

Don't forget, the fuel cells in the C5R are relocated and not the same twin tubs that the 'normal' C5's have.

I kinda have to think this accident thing is a rarity. Being in the the fire department, we usually get some kind of notice, whether from the federal, state, local level, or even from other departments about common incidents, such as Corvette's bursting in to flames. To date we have recieved no such notification.
I'd chalk it up to being your plain old accident that had a terrible ending.

BTW, I've been a member of the local FD for 12 years now, and can honestly say, out of all the wrecks I've been on, NONE involved a Corvette. I guess that says something about us Corvette owners and the way we drive!

Now, Mustangs are a whole 'nother story!!!!!

I read most of the trend over on the rustang section and a bunch of the guys there said that the guy's tires were in bad shape and that he was thinking about replacing them. The cause of the wreck was a tire that came apart/went flat on the front of the car. He lost control and hit a light pole. Guess he should have gotten the tires a lot sooner. So, that tells me a combination of speed, bad tires, and bad luck all had a part in the accident. It is sad. Remove the one or both of first two and most likely there wouldn't have been an accident. I learned a long time ago that a bald tire can result in something real bad.

Hey Iteachflying. I have about 700 hours as a PVT pilot. Most of it in 172's about 20 in 310's. Someday I'll go for the instrument ticket.

H.D.

When I was a kid, I heard all kinds of horror stories related to me about a guy that was a VFD member at work with my dad. He would tell me about decapitations and dismemberments by fiberglass, involving Corvettes and only Corvettes.
He was dead set against owning Corvettes. In fact if my dad was still alive, I would probably not have one, let alone two. Good to hear the reputation is going up.
One of my freinds told me that his Uncle, Jack Vasey, was the first person ever to be killed in a Corvette. He was drag racing with a buddy and his buddywent off the road and flipped on top of the Vette. The ironic part is that he was not killed from the crash, but choked to death on a hot dog he was eating at the time.

Hi folks....

Ive been lurking here for a few months, but just wanted to chime in on this thread....

Sadly, this happened to a friend of mine back in 1988. He was the passenger in a 87? Vette. The driver was unfortunately driving at a high rate of speed, lost control of the car and went nose in to a huge tree. The driver escaped with some scratchs, but my friend wasnt as fortunate. Not exactly sure of the sequence of events, but at some point (perhaps on impact??) the car caught fire. My friend was trapped in the passenger seat due to a jammed seatbelt. (On a side note, had the seat belt released, he would be here today). Passerbys stopped to help and frantically tried to get him out, but was forced away by the flames at the very end. So, to answer your question, it is possible for this to happen. On a side note, since that sad day, I now carry scissors in my glove box incase something as freak happens again.

My Dad was the same way till I tricked'm in to Driven my L88 when I was about 22! He ended up gone 2hr driven around the Lake lookin at the collage girles! I'm shure it was because thay were Lookin at this Old Fart cruzen a 68 427 Tri-Power with the top down!!;LOL ;LOL ;LOL And Now I'm an Old Fart too!!!;LOL ;LOL ;LOL gmjunkie!!

You are only an "old fart" if you act like an "old fart"...and in THIS case.....................................nevermind:crazy

I don't know how well scissors will cut thru seat belt webbing. They may work very well, at the very least they are better than nothing. If you know someone in the fire service, or can get a Gall's catalog (www.galls.com), get a seat belt cutter. most of us who are rescue qualified (not me, yet) all (firefighters in my department) carry them. They are on par with a plastic letter opener. They slice thru seatbelt webbing like a hot knife thru butter. Most amazing thing you could see! ZIP......and your out!!!

unfortunately, stupidity usually is the reason for most "accidents" (sic) - and, even more unfortunate, when the Government gets involved and trys to regulate stupidity we have even larger problems

And ocassionally stupidity helps to clean the gene pool.
