Had my radiator flushed this morning and thought it would be a good time to replace the thermostat seeing that I just bought the car this spring and don't know it's maintenance history. Picked the car up this afternoon and took it for a ride. The car ran fine for about 5 miles, then sputtered and died. I called a flatbed and had it hauled back to the garage. By the time we got back (about an hour) the car started fine and ran no problem, so we hooked it up and pulled a code of 16. This is a problem with the optispark according to diagnostic tool. My questions would be, does the opti die slowly like this or does it usually just die completely? and do you think it's possible the mechanic got the opti wet while changing the thermostat? If it got wet would it have started and run fine for 5 miles before stalling. The car is a 1993 coupe with 92,000 miles and as I said, I don't know the car's history so I don't know if the opti was replaced before. Thanks in advance for your replies.
