I just had the exhaust system in my '99 convertible replaced because one side had completely broken at the weld, and the other side had cracks as well.

I've been told this is a common manufacturing defect with the C5, and the warranty covered the replacement.

Has anyone else had similar problems, and is this really a common manufacturing defect?

Thanks.

P.S. It sounded like the cut-off pipes talked about in one of the other threads, but it seemed to have a little more power after the pipes were replaced. Maybe it does like a little back pressure...

HI there,
Yes, this has occured on c5, and the new converters and mufflers have better welds to prevent the condition.
As for changes in performance, it is possible, however, maybe the induced air caused a clogged converter.
Please remember that converter assemblies are warrantied for 8years or 80000 miles, as long as they have been not modified.

Hi c4c5specialist,

Thank you for the quick reply and the information. I thought the warranty was only good for 3 years or 36,000 miles, which is the reason I purchased an extended warranty when I bought the car.

Do you know where I can find the details on the original warranty for future reference?

Thanks again,

Hi there,
It should be in your owners manual, actually.
However, every GM dealer knows the warranties on converters.
It is an EPA mandate to warranty PCMs and converters for 8/80.

Failed Exhaust

I already rewelded mine on both sides of coupling
