Years ago the 3x2's and intake came off my L-68. It now sports a single Holley. When the switch was made, the vent and PCV setup was never correctly addressed. When I got the car I temporally added a baffled grommet and PCV valve to the passenger side valve cover into the carb (about 6") and put an open breather on the drivers side.

Looking at the setup for the 1x4 L36 shows the PCV on the drivers side, running across the front of the carb, and into the side of the carb. The crankcase vent runs from the passenger side valve cover underneath the air cleaner base and into the flame arrestor.

I added up the cost to duplicate this setup and its going to run about $100 in parts. Since I don't have the original air cleaner base the 90 deg tube alone will cost $25, hose brackets $12 each, etc.

Is there anything wrong with my current setup? Do I solve anything routing it like the factory did? I didn't like the fact the PCV valve was such a short distance to the carb, maybe pulling in oil easier? And maybe more fumes would be pulled in with the vent running to the air cleaner? I'm trying to make everything look stock where feasible but $100 for some elbows, brackets and hose...yuck.

Thanks.

The hose from the valve cover to the air cleaner is the "intake" side of the system, where fresh air is pulled into the crankcase; the PCV valve side is the "exhaust" side of the system, where vapors exit the crankcase through the PCV valve and are drawn into the intake through the carb baseplate and burned.

The setup you have will work, but may pull over more oil, and you'll get some oil misting out through the breather. The factory put the PCV valve on the driver's side for a reason - the oil thrown off the crank is thrown down, away from the oil drainback holes, on the driver's side, but is thrown UP, directly at the bottom of the oil drainback holes on the passenger side, which causes more oil pullover into the PCV valve when the valve is mounted on the passenger side.

The PCV system will be more effective, the valve will be less likely to clog up, and the top of the engine will stay dry with the factory arrangement.

Thanks a bunch John. I didn't know that about the difference between the passenger and driver side circulation and splashing. Sound like I need to at least switch the current breather and PCV setup to the correct sides.

Thanks again.

JohnZ,

You never fail to amaze me.

There IS logic to most of this stuff - the engineers who designed and developed these systems were pretty sharp, and beat hell out of the systems during 50,000-mile durability testing to make sure it worked. Pretty hard to improve on it unless there's a new technology that wasn't available 40 years ago, as the laws of physics don't change.

Even regarding rubber fuel line hoses? :eek :L :eek

I 'spose you noticed that he never responded to my question about which OEM car/engine applications were in those two ridiculous photos he posted (posts #10 and #14 in that thread), even when I asked (nicely) a second time. 'Nuff said. P.S. - What's with the weird behavior today when composing a quoted reply? Can't get the smilies/emoticons to respond, and the quoted portion above the response is all gibberish in the box you type in?

I was watching to see if he'd wade back into it. Of all the things for someone to get their knickers in a knot about... :(

I had problems with fonts & formats etc. when using FireFox browser so I switched to Safari browser (Apple product) and everything is back to normal. Like 67 says, it'll be better soon. Upgrades are always fun.

Smilies don't work yet - don't get a "balloon" with the cursor positioned over the smile icon or the paperclip icon.

:D John, I'm using WinXP and IE6. I don't get the balloon either, but the smilie list and pull-down arrow seem to be okay. :confused
