I can get a crate 350 producing approx 330hp for $1900. Is it worth it to drop this in and store the L81 somewhere? I want to be able to run the vette at decent times and figure this would be a good starting point for increased HP. Any thoughts?

Well one things for sure, with the measely HP rating of 190 of my 81 and the stinky MPG of 15'ish...I might as well also drop in some HP from a crate engine. Heck I'll probably even get better mileage!:eyerole

Check out www.enginefactory.com . I had them build me a 350 for my 64 last winter. They were great to work with and built me a great motor, delivered to the door , for a very good price. They will build you anything, wild to mild. I had a total turn key engine built, 350 cubes and 420 hp.

My '69 gets HORRIBLE MPG and I refuse to check the mileage! :crazy My guess would be 10 or 11 average. But it goes like stink! (Yes, my foot is usually on the floor)

The original 350/300 did 14 - 19 MPG.
Good thing I have an economical Cadillac to drive daily.

I've heard the ZZ4 gets decent MPG.

Yep,I have a ZZ3, (10 hp less than a ZZ4), the engine is well put together, gets reasonable mileage, 18 on the highway, and goes like stink!)

Cheers

Is this a computer engine...or did you rip all that crap out?

Non computer, it comes with the distributor and intake manifold (GM HP dual plane).
I have a Holley street avenger 670cfm vacuum secondaries carb. I get 18 on the highway, around 13 in town. OR It goes like stink, but you cant have both at the same time. :)

Hmmm sounds like a plan...question doesn't the computer on a 81 control the trany shift points, or something like that?

Sounds pretty good for the price! The only thing I might want to change is the nodular iron crankshaft. Then again for any sane person the Nodular crank is fine, of course for me there's the rub! It should be fun and still a great driver!

Enjoy

I agree to a point as I do not think I will break it. If I had the choice I would have selected steel.

It is in transit and going to be installed in 2 weeks...I can't wait to see how 450 ftlbs of tq. feels like off the line.

450 ft lbs of tq feels like the tail is dancing! It also comes with the stong smell of burning rubber!

Koop,

I hope your right. My current set up is 240 RWH and I can't even spin the tires unless my foot is on the break at the same time.

I can't stand on the gas off the line, if I do the car just sits a smokes the tires! I love it! I have to give it about half throttle off the line, once I get moving and it hooks up completely then I can stand on it! :)

My Vette walks away from my CTS-V, my V will whip on a C5. I have yet to run the old Vette with a C6 (I hope it's from a roll and not a Z06 when I get to)

What carb setup do you have, as this is the last piece that I am trying to decide on.

Okay folks I think I found the deal of a lifetime for a crate engine. Year One has a fantastic offer for $2990.00 400+ HP and 440 Ft of tq on the dyno.
Look at my spec below I just ordered it today and will arrive in 1-2 weeks.
Just an FYI...your auto-sig shows this:
Rated at Horsepower- 500+ Torque- 540+ ft/lbs

Anyways, sounds like a lot of engine for the money. Sounds like it's built simliar to the ZZ383...couple differences though...(heads, rocker ratio, etc)

What transmission are you mating it up to? Might as well replace the the tq converter or clutch plate while the engine is out...especially since you are on the juice sometimes.

The Auto-sig includes the NOS. Meaning the engine dyno'd at 410 HP with 440 ft/lbs of tq. I have the shot of NOS at 125HP added to the engine base line numbers and I got 500+ hp and 540+ ft/lbs. This should be correct right??

The present trany is a reborn 350 turbo (2004R future) and a new 11 TCI converter, with a new clutch plate (500 miles ago). When I switch to the 2004R I will mostlikely install a 10 TCI then.

I think I might have to invest in some slicks for the track?? I am also worried about the cars suspention handeling that type of power. Do you have any sugestions on suspention upgrade "MUST HAVES"

I don't believe there's any Must Haves when it comes to suspension versus the stock just because ya got mo' powah. As for slicks, they will certainly help with drag racing, but if it's not something you are going to be doing every weekend, then I personally wouldn't bother. Just drop the pressure down to about 25psi or so and see whatcha do. Modulating the gas is gonna be the biggest thing. It's also going to depend on whether you are doing 1/8 or 1/4 mile and if your NOS is progressive or just a dump shot. That conversation is better suited for the racing forum here at the CAC. :D

I never thought of reducing the tire preasure gauge as I will only be going to the strip (for racing) 3-5 times per year this idea sounds good...thanks.

The track is a 1/8 mile so I do not think usins NOS on this track is a good way to go. As far as the NOS it comes on at 3K RPM (full throttle) and shuts down at 5500K. I guess that is progressive:confused
