Well hello from the C2 section> I am building a 62 Vette with a C4 suspention in it.I am using a dana 44 for the rear and Need to know what is the recomended oil I should use,Do I need the posi adative.and how much do I need.Lastley I cant find a rear end gasket any one have and suggestions

I think now most of the gear lubes have the posi additive in it already. What kind I do not know since I have not changed mine yet....:ugh I know I should.

You will need two bottles of the GM posi fluid. Put them in and complete the fill with a good 75W-90 gear oil. Fill the housing until the fluid just dribbles out of the fill hole and replace the plug.

You can use RTV sealant when instead of a gasket. Try the GM #9636067 selant or an equal.

There is a bolt tightening sequence to follow an looks something like this for the 44

top row: 4... 5

next row 3....1

bottom 7....2.... 6

Bolts 1 through 5 are torqued to 30 ft-lbs and bolts 6-7 to 35 ft-lbs.

The factory manual calls for one bottle of GM limited slip additive P/N 1052358 then fill with GL-5 80W90 oil. Takes about 1.5 qt of oil.

Gordon Killebrew says we should use two bottles of additive, so most do.

There is no gasket.

I used Red Line synthetic, with the additive. I found the info on their site very confusing on the additive. I ended up using the one without the additive and quickly learned that was the wrong thing to do and changed it out for the right stuff.

No damage done far as I can tell after 16 mos :)

That is the stuff I had heard of having the additive in it from one of my friends. I just couldn't think of the name, Thanks :w.

Gordon Killebrew's web site is Gordon Killebrew's For Your Car.

He practically wrote the C4 Tech Manuals. 30+ yrs w/GM, teched at BG plant.
He runs a C4 school in KY.
He's the man, just ask c4c5specialist.

Use any fluid as long as it matches GM specs, but don't forget two bottles of additive from GM.

Last year for my race car I install a new locker in the rear end . It it called a Gold Track. Its a traction sensing unit $$$:eyerole . I used Mobil one as usual and started having small problems. It was clicking and poping and all sorts of noises.I called them about it and the first thing they asked , are you using Mobil one? I then switched to Red Line with the additive they suggested and it was a world of difference. Also the heat build up was less and this is under extreme conditions of racing. I use all of Mobil 1's products but am sold on redline for the differential. I also use there trans fluids .
