I have a Delco Bose Gold CD/Cassette/Radio in my 90. It started to show the ERR message when I loaded a CD but would play after a few attenpts at inserting a CD.

Now it's gone real bad and will only occassionally play. It won't even eject a CD unless I switch it off. It just makes a strange static noise thiugh every now and then it will play a CD as if there's nothing up.

I'm guessing it's the laser or transport mechanism (it's only a guess though!) Anyone else had this problem? Is this likely to be the sort of routine repair that any stereo repair shop can perform?

Anyone had any luck with cleaning the laser lens? All the cleaning kits I've seen have brushes and I tried one and it got stuck! It came out finally after a LOT of time with the eject button!

A while ago I was thinking of changing to an aftermarket setup but I decided against it because I like the "stock" look of the Delco though I'm starting to wonder. Every Bose I've owned and a few others I've known have given plenty of trouble.

Mind you, my car is 12 years old...

Delco Bose

Hi, thanks for your reply. This is happening with commercially produced CDs. Out of interest can you play burned CDs? I thought that was only an option with new CD players?

mine too

My bose gold setup has been acting like that too.. it seems like it will take an old comercial CD and play find but I go buy a new one at the store and it gives me grief.. with that stupid err message.. when mine gets real bad I am going to send it out to a company that repairs OEM electronics like digital dash's and radio I think the guys my shop goes through it D and R or something like that.. anyway.. thats my 2 cents..

Mine had the same problem. I had Factory Car Stereo Repair go thru and rebuild. Works fine now.

Hi,
Your problem is not that unusual for the Delco Bose Gold CD player. The repair can be done by only a few shops in North America. One that seems to have a good reputation is Doctor Don's. Check out www.doctordons.homestead.com

Dr.Dons reworked my delco bose cd player, they are very good and quick!and reasonable!

My problem is a little different... I just bought a '94 with the Delco Bose AM/FM/Cassette/CD (U1F). Everything works great except for the CD player. It will not pull the CD into the player.

I've had the thing apart a few times, and thought that I'd see a mechanical trip lever of some sort that senses the existence of the CD which activates the rollers and pulls it in. I cannot find any such mechanical device.

If I apply 12 volts directly to the motor that drives the rollers, the CD will pull in just fine, so I know the motor is OK. I just don't know what activates it!

Does anyone know if the laser senses the CD, then activates the rollers to pull it in? If so, I don't suspect I'll be able to fix it myself.

I did check out your 'Doctor Don's' suggestion, however, and it looks like he can handle the repair for $150 plus $12 for shipping. That beats the $300+ repair services I've seen elswhere, but I'd sure like to put that money towards a Hurst shifter, instead :)

Strider:
Thanks! Actually I had it repaired by Doctor Don long ago. I must have posted the good news to a different thread. Someone told me about Doctor Don being on EBay. Sure enough, I found his auction, won it for $120 or so (I believe), and sent it off to him for repair. I got it back within a week after he received it! It has worked flawlessly all Summer, and I highly recommend his service.

You can burn your own CDs for the early Bose players...just be sure to use the 74 minute disks. Many C4 Bose players won't read the 80 minute disks. The 74 minute disks are getting hard to find, but I got a bunch on sale at BestBuy for 12 cents each. Some burning software allows you to specify the old Red Book standard. The Nero Burning software automatically detects the older disks and configures itself correctly. Hope this helps.....

Actually, I had an opertunity to use Doctor Don's service this summer, and he now has an special upgrade which plays the CDR's much more reliably than previous players. I have only burnt 80 min cdr for the player, with no problems so far.

That's nice to know Strider. I'll file that info away until the inevitable happens and the Bose goes......
