Hi

While checking out some local Chevy dealers for a used C5 l noticed that they think we were born in a bubble.

For 01/02 with over 35,000 miles they are asking $34,000 plus for a coupe.

Now with a little common sense and searching around you will find 04's under $40,000 after all the bull.

Don't forget if you ask for a C6 they will give you the run around and then add what they call market adjusted price between $5000 and up with a straight face.

I understand that a dealership is in the market to make money but l think it's a little to much lopsided in their favor.

It is almost as cheap to buy a 04 new then a used 02/03 in the northeast.

On a C5 97 thru 00 they will give you on a trade maybe $20,000 if they have to and only if it is in perfect condition or until you bring it in the day your new vette is ready to be picked up. And then find a reason to make the $20,000 a lessor number.

If you find an honorable dealer cherish the dealer for life because they are out there.

Finding them is the problem.

Also never tell a dealer that you are going to pay for cash until the day you are going to pick up your vette because they lose the financing fee which could be $500-$700 dollars if not more which they already figured into your bottomline.

Register your own car and save another kool $100.

Boy do they get you coming and going.

And lastly you cannot beat them at their own game because they deal every day with ignorant people who pay sticker price or throw in a pair of floor mats which already comes with the car anyway.

Before buying my '04 Commemorative Coupe last week, I looked at 2 C6 coupes on the showroom floor. One fully loaded, the other basically base. Both had $15,000 (yes, 15 THOUSAND) dollar market value stickers on them. However if you are smarter than the average bear the dealers catch on quick. It took less than 30 seconds of talking to the dealer before he dropped the $15k and offered MSRP. Didn't care for the color though. They went searching for a C6 built how I wanted it came back with one and showed me the invoice ($44k) and MSRP for $50k and said they couldn't get anything less than $2k over MSRP since they were going to have to do a dealer trade, blah, blah, blah, etc... Passed on that one and instead made a great deal on my '04 CE Coupe. Invoice was just shy of $45. When you run the numbers, I paid $39986... tack on my upside down extra from my Boxster trade in (owned it for a little over a year), extra for tax and etc..., I financed $48k on a car with an MSRP of $51,500. Not too shabby and would have been even better had I not been upside down on my trade... of course I rarely keep a car long than a year to a year and half... Yet I always seem to come away with some great deals in the end!

You are exactly right about the 04s. I was looking for a good used 00-02 myself and decided for a little more could get me a new one with the full warranty and peace of mind of knowing how it has been treated. I am a firm believer in good used cars and think it is financially smart. I've only bought 2 new cars before the first a 91 Camaro and the 2nd my C5. As far as the C6 is concerned. It is growing on me quick but there is no way under the sun I'll pay any "market adjusted" price for one. It is like everything else that comes out new that gets a lot of hype. PT Cruisers come to mind. People were handing the dealerships money hand over fist for them. I'll wait till the 06 C6 rolls off and give it some serious thought. Till then, I'm loving my C5 baby! :)
