Did I get ripped off on my Corvette?

Well its kinda of a stupid question since I am almost 100% sure I did. Basicly I ended up getting rushed in to buying a corvette because I was buying it behind my moms back, im still in highschool ;). My friend found this 81 corvette with a new 350 edelbrock highperformce engine, with alot of chrome parts. So I went out there and looked at it. Then bought it the next day. The engine seemed in perfect condtion, the only thing that seemed like it needed to be replaced was the dash and carrpet, also the steering seemed like it needed to be aligned cause it curved to the right really bad. So I get it home and a week later I the power seat broke, I was stuck driving all the way up to the wheel, so I take it to a local shop to have all the power stuff fixed and everything checked out and the transmission and oil was leaking. So I take it in and get a call back saying its going to be 3k for repairs. I say fine its ok just 3k and everything will be fine. They say its going to take 2 weeks, well it ends up taking 6 weeks cause they could not find a seat track or something, so I finnaly get it back. Right after I get it back I still notice the steering is messed and ask them about it and they say something like they did not notice anything wrong with it. Well I lost a speaker wire in the dash so I take off the bezel in the middle and find out there is nothing hold it toghter so I cant get it back in right. So I just give up and say well im still having problems with the steering and I would like to get a new dash bored and carrpet so I take it to Chevy. The next day I get a call saying the powersteering needs to be replaced the rear axel needs a ton of repairs..which was suppose to be done at the other place but all they did is replace u-joints, and the doors are broke thats why the windows dont roll up all the way. So for all that to be fixed its about 6k more on top of the already 3k I spent. I said I cant afford that and told them to just fix the steering, doors and axle and to put the dash back in as good as you can get it. So im left with it still needing a new dash, carrpet and paint job. Now the paint was fine but after I starting driving it the hod paint started to crack and I have spider vanes on the front, I SWEAR I HIT NOTHING! So this brings the grand total of the car to 15k with repairs still needed. I think I am going to cry. Could someone tell me about my engine? I really dont know anything about it, I asked the guy and he said he did not know the horse power because he did not dyno it. I bought it from a race track and the GM guy told me it was a highperformce engine but also did not know the horse power but said it could be between 125hp-225hp but that does not seem right since it is a brand new all edelbrock high performce engine and the lowest hp they have on there website is 310. Any one have anything like this happen to them when they bought a car? O well sorry for the long ranty type post.

Not to make you feel any worst, but you should have never gone behind your mom's back.
Parents are wiser than teenagers, by far.
Teenagers don't believe that, but it is true. That's just fact.
You will learn that what I said is gospel someday.
To answer your question, yea, seems like you got ripped.
Experience is a strong teacher.
I bet that won't happen again, to you.
Good luck whatever you figure out.

Don't sweat it. You have a vette, how bad can life be? Work on it yourself and save a lot of money. Hang in there and ask for any help you need - you'll get a lot here at CAC. Buy the shop manuals and some basic tools and you'll be able to fix most of it. The knowledge you gain will save you plenty of money in the long run on all the cars you'll own.

Maybe not so bad..

I really need more info on the engine. I mean it is highperfomce and new with chrome parts. Maybe the engine alone is worth 4k? does any one know what I should do to get more info on it? Write down the serial numbers and go to there website and look up each part?
But I am verry happy when I do have the car but I have not seen the car is such a long time. I would have worked on it my self but I dont have the tools.. and I picked up a hayens maunal but it does not have much detail.
I went behind my moms back because I have wanted a corvette for years and when it came time to buy a car she would not let me get anything I wanted with my money. When my friend went out and bought a GTO!
How cheap do you think I could do the dashbored, steering wheel leather, leather seats and carrpet for? I could do the dashbored and steering my self but the seats and carrpet I dont think I can.

BENDER, when i was just starting my mechanical career here at disney a wise older guy told me something i'll always keep with me.
IF YOU KNOW HOW IT WORKS, YOU CAN FIX IT!

read anything and everything, ask questions seek advice and even request help, don't be embarrassed to learn. in the long scheme of things you'll be richer and prouder to learn and fix it yourself.
as you can see i also am a floridian, just ask if i can help i will.
NOTE, just cause the engine has a few extra doesn't make it hi-performance..

hope this helps

Well, I'd say that you didn't make a mistake buyng the car-
- Rather you over estimated a lot of variables that you did not forsee. That's where a parents experience comes into play!

I have had my 78 since I was 16 years old. My Vette has been the best education about life that I ever had. I learned how to repair cars from working on that car!

Sure. I have lots of horror stories like spending a lot of cash to get dealership repairs in the early days. By the time I was 18 I had a job as an apprentice to a mechanic. My learing culminated in installing my TPI in college.

You are learning valuable lessons in life. Committment, time management, financial budget planning, and of course... the value of using mom and dads experience.

Good luck. The guys and gals of the CAC will help you anyway they can!

:(

ah .... that daryl. he really knows how to speak his mind

You really can't buy experience- but in your case your going to pay for it. Lots of luck to your mom.

Thanks..

Well thanks every one for the advice, I guess there is nothing I can do now but enjoy my corvette and forget about the past. The first thing I am going to do after I get my car back is after I drive it for a while is 1) Paint the interior doors 2) Replace the door handle inside. Can I get vinyl paint in town or do I have to order it from ecklers? and once I get it what do I do tape of the parts of the door I dont want paint on since it is spray paint?

Buying a 'vette behind your parents back, eh? Been there, done that :) That was about ten years ago...I was over 21, but still living at home under my parents rules...my dad was ****ed for weeks! Lucky for me though my 'vette was perfect.
Umm, as far as your 'vette...since you already put a lot of $$$ into it, option 1 is to keep it and learn from it...you will never get your money back...but don't feel bad because 99% of us are in the same boat.

Options 2 is for you to look into your states lemon laws for help. I assume this car didn't come with any kind of warrenty...
Also, if your under 18, you may be in luck as you are a minor & cannot legally enter into a contract...thus making the sale of your car null and void...(Check your local laws though)..You'd probably lose the money you already sank into it though...

I find it odd that you got FORCED into buying the car in the first place. You said you looked at it before you bought it, so whats the problem? If you paid to much for it thats your own fault, if you didn't notice the problems when you first looked at it well I guess you live and learn. No one had a gun to your head forcing you to buy the car, you could have past on it and found one in better shape. I don't mean to sound uncaring about your situation but this is what is called "LEARNING THE HARD WAY".

My friend said that...

The friend who found the car for me told me I might be able to claim the car was a lemon but since it was a private owner and the guy told me he only knew the engine was in good condtion and said he does not know anything about the rest of the car I dont know. It just so happens the friend who found this car for me just bought a car and his engine basicly blew up :/ lol bad luck with cars huh? I think I am going to sign up for Autotech and school, we get to use the lifts on friday.

There is no substitute for knowledge. If you don't have knowledge then you must ask those who do. Joining this forum and participating here is a good start.

When you have a problem you should research it here and in books before you turn it over to someone else. Go to the NCRS site on NCRS.ORG and get yourself an assembly manual. It is known as an AIM. That will tell you how the car is assembled and will help you disassebble it and then put it back together.

Check out member websites as these problems arise often and people are nice enough to document them on their websites. Learn how to search the web there is a ton of information there.

Lesson number one when you take your vette to a shop make sure the shop is familiar with vettes or you will be paying $50.00 to $100.00 per hour for the guy to learn.

Lesson number two ask for a detailed estimate and then discuss each item to see exactly what is being done. It is your money and you have a right to know. Never assume anything. That is why you do research. When they tell you they are replacing U joints you should know that they should be checking a number of other items that go into the rear suspension. If they don't know that you got the wrong shop. He should have checked the trailing arms, bushings, rear spring and bushings, rear spindle, etc.

Lesson number three parents have been around longer than you and probably have made many of the same mistakes as you have and will make in the future. Learn form them they are not as stupid as you think. That you will learn as you get older and you see that what they are trying to do is prevent you from making the same mistakes and paying the price.

As far as the repairs that were done at your local shop go back to him and see what exactly he did and what type of warranty he gives on his work. Get a breakdown of parts and labor. For $3000 he should have put in a whole new front and rear suspension and still had time left over to replace you power steering. Get Corvette catalogs like Corvette Central, Mid America, Ecklers so that at least you know what the retail price for parts are. It is easy to get ripped off once. It is a fool who gets ripped off the second time.

I learned quick about looking up the parts in ecklers since the 2nd shop its been in. Now its in Chevy and I saved alot of money by not letting them do the dash and carrpet.. He wanted to charge me 2k just for the dash! when the dash only costs 500.00 new. He also wanted to charge alot of the windshield leaks to be fixed but I found a place that will do it for 150.00. Can someone tell me what a good paint jobs runs at? Yellow or silver cant decide silver looks cool but yellow stands out.

I feel your pain. I have a 66 impala. This car sat in a garage for 21 yrs. I had a ton of fun fixing this car. I learned a lot too. Then i got a 97 vette from my uncle as a gift. This car is a whole new ballgame. I cant do a damn thing on it. Its all confusing computers. it has 12000 miles and its had steering column lock, and climate control issues. All to the tune of 1500 bucks. Now you on the other hand have it easy. you have an old car like my impala. Very easy to work on. As far as 3k for that work thats a ripoff i have no idea how they are charging you that much money for little things. As far as saving dough stay away from places like ecklers and go to your local auto parts store. Prices on ecklers and mid america are jacked up pretty high. Also stay away from the dealer!

Good Luck
-Andy

Bender,
What part of FL ya in?

Lots (i mean LOTS) of members of this forum in the FL area.
Might have a few in your actual town that can loan ya parts catalogs, send ya to good quality, fair priced, repair shops, and might have spare parts they could part with to aid ya in fixing this new vette up.

Very giving group here -
Make use of it - there will certainly come a day when you can give back to the community that helped you now.

Good luck

Gainesville, FL. I hear Ocala has good shops for some reason and they are about half the price they are in Gainesville. Why does FL have so many Corvettes any way? I dont think there has been a day here I have not seen like 10 of them. I almost want to say they are as common as civics down here ;)

BENDER, keep in mind if you order from eckler's you'll pay shipping AND sales tax. get catalogs from out-of state vendors. you'll save 6 to 7% .plus some are cheaper to start with,.
