Did I get ripped off on my Corvette?

The car was 8k and I have a scholarship so I dont have to worry about school ;) But I did not want to spend 6 months on my car before I could drive it. But I am doing all the interior my self, the only thing I dont want to do is the carrpet because it seems like I could **** up putting it in and just ruin pre cut carrrpet.

8k sounds about right for a 81 with a edelbrock crate engine in good shape. My nephew bought an 80 L-82 this past summer with an original motor (which he blew up) for 6,500.

He also replaced his dash. Believe me carpet is a walk in the park compared to a dash replacement. You should replace the carpet when you replace the dash. It's easier to replace the dash with the seats out anyway. The only other thing you would need to remove would be the parking brake console, since you need to unscrew the shift console to get the gauge console out of the way for the dash replacement. Like you said it's pre-cut, how hard can it be?

You can't be a fraid to screw up, you just need to be patient. If you already have a scholarship then I'm sure your smart enough to get it in.

When I say dashbored I just mean the plastic, like not the whole thing, its just cracked in the middle above the ac. Is the the dashborad more then one part? I think the part I need is called Dash Pad, im not sure tho but once I get my corvette back I will post some pictures of it.

I believe that the 81 is the same as the 80. In which case the dash or dash pad is one piece. Which is the dash top and the part that extends down on both sides (around the tach and speedometer on the left and down around the glove box on the right). You have to disconnect it from the center gauge bezel and the tachometer/speedometer bezel. You also have to remove the glove box, heater vents and the headlight switch, in other words anything that is attached to the dash. The dash usually runs around $500.

However if the top pad is the only part that is cracked there is an easier and cheaper fix. They sell top dashpad covers that fit over the top of the dash and stick on with double sided tape.

I think "The Last Detail" also has something called a Dash Pad Cap, and are around $110

They also make carpeted dash mats for around $45, but I'm not sure if it would cover your damage. You could order it and if it didn't cover the damage send it back.

O well the glovebox does not close all the way anymore, so that needs to be fixed but wont the dashpad overlay look cheap?

I don't know but I'm sure someone here does. Start a new thread and ask the question.

I think im just going to look for a used dash because this dashborad is also falling off.

Dont you just love old cars! =) Carpets easy stuff if there is one thing you want the shop to do its your brakes. Make sure they are ok. I found out the hard way crashing my 66 impala ragtop! Sounds like a fun project too bad i dont live near you i love working on an old car!

Good Luck,
Andy
