Did l get ripped off by dealer?????????????

HI

l finally found the rattle coming from the front of my 96 LT1. It was the disc's or l think it could be the pads. Anyway he said that they weren't the originals and that they were rattling because they did not a clip.

He also said that GM has the clips attached to the disc's or pads and the cost was approx $210 and 1 hour of labor.

Now this seems high for me, but l cannot do this myself and the car was there already and if l went to an independent brake shop, l could wind up with a larger bill. They could always say l need this or that.

or does the $210 include labor?

The spring is on the inboard shoe.
In the picture below, called the anti-rattle clip
(It is a piece of bent metal under pressure)

$210 for parts seems a bit high. (If this is the part that he is refeering to)

It must be the anti rattle clip and gm sells the shoe and clip as one unit (they are attached). This is for both front tires.

l guess l was had!!

If he replaced the shoes as well.... then maybe not.
If he replaced the shoes, you got a partial brake job. I (personally) am unsure if they are attached on the '96.

Maybe others could comment on the price...

96 have the anti rattle clips. If the pads were replaced with OEM then the price is not that bad. Consider that 1 hour labor alone cost around $65-$75 an hr.

Now you can see why I do my own work. I use Performance Friction Z-rated pads. Best deal is at Autozone parts store. Approx $60 for the rear pads and $80 for the front pads. Plus you get a free one time replacement when the pads wear out. These same pads go for retail $129.00 fronts and like $90.00 for the back anywhere else including the Manufac. website.

OEM pads are not cheap. You can use Ford Mustang SVT Cobra pads in our calipers, I'm almost positive about that. They are suppose to be cheaper than the vette OEM pads.

GM list price on the pads, (shoes), is $211.78. Lake Chevrolet sells them for $158.84 plus shipping. It sounds like you came out with a fair deal.

The 1 hour labor isn’t bad; our mechanics could spend that long looking for a lug wrench.

I replaced my front and back pads with Wagner Thermo Quiet pads. My friend works for a Firestone dealer in Jersey, says they last very long, dont produce much dust and work better than stock.

120 for both sets, took me more time take off the wheels and put them back on than to do the actual brake job, both sets came with the clips.

They were replaced last summer and I didn't pay a cent :J I'm not sure what my mechanic put in there but I seriously doubt he had the GM clips . I'll find out and let you know

Ya, did a search to see if I could find any new info.
I did a search on some of the autoparts stores and it looks like they sell the kit for about 9 bucks.
I did look thru the rim and think they are missing
