hi guys i need to know what the electrical differences are between the 84 doug nash tranny and the 88. i replaced the 84 with an 88 and the 88 is missing two electrical "plug-ins" that the 84 has and the overdrives don't work. anyone know what these plugins do? or how to get the od working? the replacement had really low miles and it shouldn't be mechanical.. :mad

All you really need to be sure is that the Solenoid Switch is hooked up. That's really all that engages it.Make sure you have 12 VDC from the Console Switch to the Solenoid at the Trans.

"All 1984 cars had 3 switches (1st, 2nd, and 4th ). 1985 , 1987, and 1988 cars had a 1st gear switch and 1986 cars had NONE."

You should install the same switches on the side cover that match your original setup. Prob easier to install 84 side cover ( can do in car with exh out )
The ECM will be looking for inputs from the gear position switches in order to operate O/d correctly and as you can see these are different dependent apon year
Also doesn't the '84 have a kickdown cable off the O/d? What did you do about that.

If you wanted a quick fix ,could just run a wire from the O/d relay through a switch giving total manual control without any input from ECM
