Differential Whine

I have a 2006 M6 Convertible, 58000 miles. don't know the history of the car, but it does have a bad whine from the rear. Sounds like the ring and pinion having an issue to me. its more noticable at about 35mph in 4th gear and just at that throttle sweet spot, right between accelerating and decelerating . Anybody else had this happen or can i chalk it up to previous abuse?

A "bad whine" is indicative of a problem with the transmission or the drive axle. Either way, you could be looking at an expensive repair.

If the whine is only in 4th, it may be the trans rather than the axle but understand that noise diagnosis is rather hard via the Internet.

Hi there,

Chassis ears are the most definitive way to accurately determine source of rear end noises. Your certified technician will be able to use these tools to determine if its the transmission, differential, hub bearings or something else.

Normally, my first course of action after listening with chassis ears is to drain fluid on both differential and transmission to determine if there are any internal issues with those components.

Remember, the driveline acts as a microphone, amplifying sounds into the cabin.

So, dont be surprised if the noise is not where you think it sounds like its coming from.
