Difficulty getting into reverse

Hi folks - I am a very proud, and first time corvette owner, of a 1991 ZR-1. I wrapped up this purchase this past weekend as a 40th birthday present to myself...about a year early.

I of course spent the entire weekend going through the car, books and records, marveling at the condition the car is in, considering its age. It has a mere 37,000 miles and has been garaged since it was new.

One thing I have noticed is that it takes some brute force to get the shifter pushed far enough over to the right and down to engage reverse. There are no odd sounds or grinding, just is a very difficult position for the shifter. I have looked for comments on this issue but have come up short.

Any thoughts?

In 1991, there is a 'lockout' for reverse... it is the round handle thing obove the shift boot, below the shift knob. you have to pull it up to engage reverse... are you pulling that up?

No, i was not pulling up. I had not noticed the lockout ring. I feel kind of stupid.

I am going to make a confession here so you know you aren't the first. When I test drove my 90 I did the same thing. That darn ring is not very conspicuous.I didn't find it till the day after I got it. Kind of like, "wonder why they have this goofy ring here." :duh

I am going to make a confession here so you know you aren't the first. When I test drove my 90 I did the same thing. That darn ring is not very conspicuous.I didn't find it till the day after I got it. Kind of like, "wonder why they have this goofy ring here." :duh

Hi All, I'll make a confession too. I have egg on my face also! I got in it and didnot think that the ring on the top of the shifter boot of my 90 ZR-1 was the reverse lock out release!!! Boy did I feel stupid!!! It took me about five minutes of thinking before I tried to move the ring up to get reverse!:duh
