Hi Everyone

I have a 1986 Coupe that I want to disable or bypass the VATS "Vehicle Anti Theft System". I Know there is a way.
I just can't seem to find it.

Thanks

Dogster

You can order a by pass kit from Mid America or Ecklers. The kit comes with a one page set of instructions that are extremly easy to follow. It's basically unplug the VATS, plug in the by pass (the instructions tell you exactly where the connector is). I've installed a few and they only take a couple of minutes. But, before you order one you need to go to your local Chevy dealer and have them read the code on your key (1-15). You'll need that when you order the by pass.

The one I normally order cost 24.99 from Mid America, part # 601-116. But like I said, I know Ecklers used to sell one as well.

Thanks a million, I will call mid-America first thing in the morning.

Thanks Again

If you have key code #8, I have one that has never been used I can let you have for $15.00. I ordered for a guy who gave me the wrong key code (long story). Anyway, its just sitting here collecting dust; e-mail me at m-r-vettes@msn.com if it will work for you.

I check code first thing in the morning and let you know.

Thanks Again

VATS defeat

Try this thread, down near the bottom.

Not sure whether the resistance values are the same from year to year but by measuring your key, you should be able to put the resistor in at the bottom of the stearing column. Buy 1% resistor to be sure and use a precision ohmeter to measure your key.
Hope this helps
PS there's an older thread that has a graphic of the connector. Look under 'search' tab above.

Any good locksmith will be able to tell you the code if you show them the key.

Thanks everyone I certainly appreciate all the help!!!!!!!
As it turned out my key code was a 12. I used the chart and was able to use both a 1.5 Ohm, and a 4.75 Omh resistors because the local radio shack did not have a single value that would work,
And at this point the vette has started 27 times in a row,,,,,,,I don't think it has done that since it came out of the factory
You folks are the best!!!

Thanks again
Dogster

Excellent :_rock Exactly what I had to do as well, no single value ressiters here either.

Come on back in anytime and you'll find the same kind of help available :beer :w
