For most street applications you'll get best combination of street performance across full rpm range using a dist that has BOTH vacuum and mechanical (centrifugal) advances ... like the one that came on your 74 ... that's a great distributor when it's in good condition. The later big cap HEI is as good a distributor as chevy ever used ($20-$40 junkyard, $110 -$225 new) ... but it won't drive the mech tach that a 74 has ... you'd have to pair HEI dist with a tach from a 75 thru 77 vette ($50-$100). Then there's the MSD tach drive ... but it MUST be paired with a MSD 6 or similar box ... total about $450/pair new. Your old tach drive distributor can be rebuilt ... and/or converted to electronic "pseudo-hei" w/Pertronix.

Your ignition choice should be guided by your present engine configuration and how you plan to use it.

I have more than few distributors ... several NEW HEI ... and some MSD stuff. Email me if interested. qaferret@aol.com
