I was changing my tran oil & went to lower the car & I noticed that the left front trolly jack had no weight on it. I was a little suprised.

Has anyone else had their car up on jacks & noticed this?

Thanks!

I guess it could - A guy at a shop had a chevy up on a lift - suspended at 3 points of the frame - he said the car was straight - floor was crooked :eek

Yup. When I did my exhaust, the front wheels were on the ground and the back was on two stands - or so I thought. Turned out to be a half-inch gap between one stand and the frame. It wound up being a problem, because for the life of me I could NOT get the passenger side back down to the ground (when jacking the driver's side) to get that driver's side stand out. Did it eventually, but wasn't easy.

These things will stay up in the air in several odd configurations, and it doesn't even take three points. I had some difficulty, and discomfort raising and lowering mine to get the motor out. A little unnerving at times to say the least.:eek

I woudn't do it just for kicks. The vette is designed that way because of the targa top, which when removed the windshield won't just collapse. The chasis is designed to be more supportive, but flexing to an extent does occur. I've seen vette winshields crack from hard launches with slicks at the track. Because the cross bow is not present on convertibles, the convertibles get an extra brace underneath, known as the X brace. some will even install an X brace on their coupes for added support. So while it is very rigit in design compared to most cars on the road, I wouldn't recommend this situation very often.

Yes, I agree, I didn't feel too comfortable knowing one corner of the car was completely unsupported. I wish they made drive on ramps that don't skid across the garage floor when you try to go up on them. I never seem to get them to work.

I may get that pumpkin lift thing, as there doesn't seem to be anywhere for a floor jack in the back on the corners, is there?

If you do not use the side jacking points for lifting the rear, the only option is the third member. Do yourself a favor though if you're going to buy a piece for that purpose; you can do it a lot cheaper by finding someone to weld a piece of angle iron to your floor jack's saddle; a spare one if possible, that way you still have one for other duty. That's what I did, plus the soft rubber pad saddle I bought for my floor jack spreads the load a little more evenly on the side lifting points. ;)
