Door Ajar Switch

I just replaced the LH Door Adjar Switch. Worked great when "exercised" by hand - lights go on and off normally after a 15 sec. delay. When I shut the door, the switch broke apart leaving only the mounting section on the door; everything else went into the door. I was able to fish out everything but the guts to the switch which fell into the door.

My question, the replacement switch had an extended tip where the original's tip was flush with the top of the button. I got another from the local dealer and he says they are all the same. Did I do something wrong?

I thought those switches were adjustable for length and that the first time the door is shut it would shorten itself to fit the car. Maybe the self adjusting feature of yours didn't work.

On my 92, the RH door's switch adjusted itself too short and would leave the lights on and cause other problems. I pulled the center part out and put a small o-ring around it to keep it out far enough to work.

Thanks Tuna, the switch did self adjust. I guess the first one was defective.

Good deal.
About the only thing I can add is:
If the center piece gets pushed in a little too far - i.e.: the door ajar light comes on intermitantly over rough roads and transitions - you can pull the center out a little bit and make the switch push in a little farther.
Otherwise, it ought to be good to go for a long time.
