Can anyone tell me if you have to remove the door glass to get the mirrors off of a 1978? If so how difficult is it to remove the glass?

Thanks

You might be able to leave the door glasses in. Lower the two bottom stops on each door glass and see if the window won't go down far enough to get to the nuts on the base of the mirrors. Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) shows the stops and window hardware, and the mirror mounting.

:)

getting the glass out of the mirror is simple.. just immerse the entire thing in laquer thinner overnite with the glass facing down... when you pick it up in the morning , the mirror will be laying there in the thinnner. do not use a plastic or vinyl bucket as the laquer thinner could melt it and leave you with a heck of a mess.

I agree, works like a champ! I did mine last year, then rebonded it in with RTV later.

I think that there has been a misunderstanding. What I am needing to do is to remove the mirror from the door not the glass from the mirror. I just had the car painted and I think they installed the plastic mounting gaskets backwards. Looks like someone tried to pickup the car by the mirrors. Windows also roll down fine but bind when you try to roll them up with the door closed. Is there adjustments that can be made?

Yeah, Mike gave you the right answer, Curtis and I were just giving you some extra info in case you needed to take the glass out. Sorry

Since I finally got around to doing it I'll answer my own question incase anyone else was wondering. The door glass does have to be removed to get to the back bolt on the mirror.

Like Mike said, lower the window stops, and then you;ll need a 1/4 drive socket set with a universal joint to get at the mirror screws up inside the upper renforcement of the door edge. It takes a little patience and time but they came right off when i did it on my 79 L-48
