Driving it MORE because of gas price

Compared to 10 mpg in the '77 and '98 Ford truck guzzlers the Vette is the emergency economy car with 19 average mpg. After 30 years it seems like we could have figured something out. I remember the gas lines in '73.

The 'war on terror' has a price.. about $2 a gallon. Sorry about the political slant but dayamm we need to lose this vulnerable position. It makes us be friendly with folks that don't see it our way.

I agree with what you're saying. With that said, If you can own a vette as a play toy, you can afford gas....I'll keep putting premium in the vette, even when its $5.00 /gallon.

i know what you mean. My vette gets really good gas mileage with the M6. Prices have been around 2 bucks. When im going above 40 mph im in 5th gear it saves me a lot on gas. i get 20 mpg. My 6 cylinder camaro gets worse mileage which seems strange to me but whatever!

Same here, 94 Chevy PU=10mpg at best. Vette=20mpg, 17mpg if I floor it at every stop sign and light. Far more economical. Got the car out as soon as the salt was washed off the road, for that very reason.

Good progress with regards to mileage and driveability have been made during the last 30 years thanks to fuel injection. There ARE better solutions but would anyone want to buy a Hydrid Corvette?

I read a fascinating biography on Bill Lear. He invented many engineering marvels including the Lear Jet and the 8 track stereo tape player to name a few. His greatest world changing marvel never had a chance. A near perpetual motion steam engine!

Anything that burned would start the process, anything. The machine used steam compression and reclaimed the exhaust vapor (steam) and condensed it back into water (fuel). Zero pollution.

OK, we all know how pathetic Stanley Steamer engine power was. He installed this engine in a school bus and ran it 100 MPH! The horsepower was around 250. it got 200 miles per gallon of WATER!


So why aren't we cruising around on Evian? Oil companies. Standard Oil started the US economy in the 30s. The tendrils extend to every corner of commerce. Any innovation has been snuffed out by them. I see shelves of alternative engines in a hanger at Area 51 next to the alien spacecrafts.

These companies 'suggested' to Lear that he should not persue the technology. There would be repercussions to his loved ones. Welcome to Nazi Germany.

It's not depressing. That's how corporations and Government have always worked and always will. It's just a shame non the less.

I too have been driveing the vette as much as possible as my bronco gets about 9 to 13 miles a gallon and the Vette is at 22+

It looks as if there are some folks here who are turning their backs on the laws of physics.

The two most important factors in fuel consumption are weight and aerodynamics. It takes much more fuel to haul more weight. It also takes much more fuel to push a vehicle with more frontal area through the air.

In case you haven't noticed, a large truck or suburban will be about DOUBLE or more the weight of a Vette and have probably TRIPLE the frontal area.

All modern vehicles in all categories are MUCH more fuel efficient than their counterparts of twenty or more years ago. There has been a massive amount of R&D that has brought us to this point. There's no conspiracy at work here, just good old free enterprise.

Would you rather be living in Western Europe where gasoline is at least $6 per gallon?

BTW, the rise in gasoline prices has nothing to do with action in Iraq. There are several factors that are effecting it.

First, it's the same ol' OPEC handcuffing the world with their price fixing. This organization could not operate in the US because they would be blatantly violating the US anti-trust laws.

Second, laws pushed through by environmental extremists have made it financially unfeasible to build new refineries. Our refinery capacity is at its max, so they will naturally charge more for seasonal changeover etc. You can't blame someone for not building a new refinery if they are going to lose money doing it.

We still have, by far, the cheapest gas prices in the world. I'm not saying that we should like these prices, but you need to look at the factors behind it instead of just believing whatever CNN or Dan Rather tells you. Don't go through life as just another sheep in the flock.

Drove from Indianapolis to Auburn Fest today.

From my home, got on the highway turned my air condtioning on and set my cruise control to 74 mph. Total distance to Auburn, 141 miles. I had an average fuel burn of 29.7 mph !!!!!

Perhaps our oil wealth is being reservered stratigically, I dunno :confused But, as Americans we will do what needs to be done to survive, at all costs individually. That's ALL that really matters in the end.

Coming from a man who gets a yearly check from those oil companies averaging 1,600.00 for the past 5 years. This years check was 1,100? Which a price of gas is 2.00 so 550 gallons of gas that would buy. THaat's enough for 27 weeks of gas in a vette.

What would be your clean burning source that can provide the 600+ degrees to heat a water source that large and produce enough steam at the same time?

Amazing, gas is only one by product of oil. You need to go look at all the other things oil itself produces or is used in the production of.


Nobody is looking at the fact that the value of the dollar is currently declining. What about China, they have been buying raw materials from any source, including oil. There are so many factors in the valuation of gas.

Sounds like you need to get your head out of a hole and stop believing in the X-files. Gas has been one commodity that has take na long time to rise to it's current price based on inflation. Look at a gallon of milk, loaf of bread, a coke even. How often do most of you eat at McD's. Look at their prices for a burger fries and a coke in the mid 60's and compare it today.

IMHO you will not see gas dip below 2.00 for a long time....... if ever again.

$5/gal. is what I pay and I drive ThunderRoad as much as I can. Over here it is not just the gas. To drive Thunder through france I pay more in tolls than I do for gas.:eyerole
