DYMAGS - different styles, part II

I think I have the only CR-1 with Dymags(no recess) 17x9.5 & 17x11 because Dymag quality control was getting bad at the time,so Callaway went with OZ.**Any other CR-1 out there with Dymags??

Tony - I am going to go out on a limb here and say, I bet your Callaway CR1 is one of a kind :)
Do your Dymags say Callaway on the spoke??
The 17x11's I have seen so far, were the "Challenge" style and said DYMAG on one spoke and CORVETTE on the other. :cool

Eric - I recall that magazine - w/ the polished lip on the 16" Dy's - I have also seen one car w/ a set finished in silver (The 1986 Malcom Konner Twin Turbo)

Good stuff!! :m

Here is a pic of the "Challenge" 17x9.5 & the 17x11's (they have the smaller 90 caps in them intead of the normal 88/89 lug cover cap...

Chris.....I love the Dymags with the large lip on the rear rim. Looks awesome! There was a white Snake Skinner ZR-1 at the Vette museum a few years back with those rims and they were painted white....very sharp!

Which ones?

Don't know what the heck I got! When i got my CR-1,I asked Reeves why one of the spokes didn't say Callaway and he replied that we were lucky to get 2 good 17x11 non defective Dymags at the time & we should leave well enough alone. They fit the description of the Challenge wheels but have full center caps & say on the inside "Made in England for Callaway Cars by Dymag"

89x2 what would a set of thr challenge wheels on the red ZR1 go for if any could even be located?I saw a picture of a red ZR1 from the GATHERING AT BG and it had those wheels...JERRY

I am thinking that you mean these wheels??

If so, The last set I found for sale (Used) were 3 grand and were all17x9.5's - Having said that, the owner was reluctant to sell at that price (remember, these are used wheels and will generally need to be refinished)
So the only set I have found, Used, for 3 g's I suspect you would pay at least 500 bucks more to have a set of 17x11's substituted for the rears - provided an owner is willing to part with this awesome wheel!!!!

Amazingly, the Dymag wheel shown above in the pic is STILL on the DYMAG website www.dymag.com however, they claim not to make it anymore:confused
I know more than a few folks who would buy them if re-cast :upthumbs
Hope this helps

However, if you meant these wheels (embossed w/ DYMAG on one spoke & CORVETTE on another - commonly refered to as the "Challenge wheel") I saw a set advertised for $4,000 and included Two 17x9.5's and Two 17x11's - Sold to a Callaway Forum member about a year or so ago...

Here are the "Challenge Wheels" - Note : they would normally have the 88/89 center cap however, this owner has placed a small center cap over the hub hole and a boly where the security lug goes...

Tony, I suspect there are still some unknown variables out there - like the wheels w/ the "recession" to pop the center cap off or the ones w/ a bolt in the center of each spoke...

So one of your 17x11's is cast like this one's logo

and the other one is more like the one in the post above w/ "Corvette" on a spoke but also has "Made in England for Callaway Cars by Dymag" :cool

From what I understand, the mold did "wear out" and that's what ended the run of that style of Dymags:(

tires

Does anyone know what is the widest tire we can fit on the 17 inch Dymags? Also was the stock rubber (gatorbacks)? The tires just look small. Can you get 315/35s on them?

There is a gentleman in California running 315/35/17's on the Callaway Dymags - he posted awile back about running them for 5,000 miles w/out a problem.
I have kept mine at 275's but was considering something wider in the future.
Please let us know which way you decide :m

For me it would depend you the experience of you guys that have owned Callaways with Dymags for along time. I know 315/35s fit in the wheel well. I ran them on an 88 blown ragtop that I had. I don't know if the Dymag can take the abuse or if they set right on the Dymag.

I'M running 315/35/17's on one of my Callaways with Dymags and although they do bow a bit on the side walls, I haven't experience any ill effects. I've done some pretty high triple digits straightline with plenty of in and out of curves on that combo as well . Ultra Slow another Callaway owner that runs the same combo on his Callaway, also with no ill effects.

Dymag and abuse!

Our experience with Dymags under racing conditions and or heavy road racing has been described as poor.

Street use with limited high speeds will do fine with the Dymags ( 1988-1991). We have seen the workmanship with many units over the years and I am sorry to say that the quality materials are somewhat lacking. Many wheels new have patch work under the painted surfaces.

I do not trust these conditions under high speed loads. Just my two cents worth.

Take care all,
Stan:) :w

ALthough I have seen these wheels withstand some spirited driving (The flamethrower show, etc ;) ) I do take greater care w/ mine than w/ a comparable alumn. wheel. I do not use anything but soap and water, as I am a bit nervous about chemicals on these wheels and I scrub them with a sock over my hand instead of a brush...

Awhile back, I posted a thread on the mystery of Magnesium - Here is the link in case you missed it :)
Hope this helps :beer

Just want to point out that '89 style center caps, almost new rubber and shipping were part of that price...

Ive seen 315s on a stock vette rim, and I always thought it looked a little funny. I would think it would also reduce the handling of the car b/c of the increased flex of the sidewall. The 285s fit just like 275s.

BTW Cross....traction???? :L :L :L :L When youre burning the tires thru 2nd gear up to 70mph(or more in the case of the modded guys), you begin to understand why the b2k isn't a 1/4 mile car unless youre running full slicks. :D
